Daily public money update: Fading Orioles a favorite pastime

We are kicking off the week in Major League Baseball with a 12-game schedule Monday. On the tennis courts, the U.S. Open—the season’s fourth and final Grand Slam—is getting underway in New York. Let’s take a look at where the public money has gone so far as another week in the sports betting world begins.

MLB: Toronto Blue Jays -1.5 over Baltimore Orioles

Bettors’ favorite MLB play of the day is on the Blue Jays to win by multiple runs against the Orioles. Toronto on the -1.5 run line is inspiring a bloated 99 percent of the handle and 94 percent of the bets. On the money line, the Jays are massive -335 favorites. The public certainly isn’t scared away by that juice, though. A total of 87 percent of the money and 88 percent of the bets are supporting Toronto to win straight up.

And why not? The Orioles are an absurd 2-22 in their last 24 ballgames. They ended a 19-game losing streak with a back-to-back victories over the Angles last week but then promptly dropped three in a row at Tampa Bay’s hands.

MLB: New York Yankees ML over Los Angeles Angels

Bettors are also hammering the Yankees in their road date with the Angels. New York on the -145 money line is getting 97 percent of the money and 83 percent of the wagers. Punters are quite willing to give the -1.5 runs, too. The Yankees are bringing in 93 percent of the handle, and 87 percent of the bets are going in the same direction.

MLB: Boston Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays Over 8.5

When it comes to game totals, the public is all over the over in this meeting between the Red Sox and Rays. With 87 percent of the wagers supporting Over 8.5, 98 percent of the money is doing the same. There is also a lot of interest on Tampa Bay. The Rays are getting 87 percent of the handle on the -1.5 run line and 80 percent of it on the -135 money line.

U.S. Open men: Novak Djokovic to win

Djokovic is bidding to capture the first calendar-year Grand Slam on the men’s tour since 1969 (Rod Laver). We are picking him to do it, and the public is of the exact same opinion. Even though the top-ranked Serb is an overwhelming -145 favorite, he is inspiring 68 percent of the money and 44 percent of the wagers. Nobody else is drawing more than 14 percent of the handle or 15 percent of the bets (No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev).

U.S. Open women: Ashleigh Barty to win

On the women’s side, the world No. 1 and title favorite is also piquing the public’s interest. When healthy, Barty has been the dominant player in the game. So it’s not surprising to see that 34 percent of the handle and 31 percent of the wagers are backing the reigning Wimbledon champion. The next-most activity is on Naomi Osaka, who is generating 13 percent of the money and 15 percent of the bets.
