A 16-game slate in Major League Baseball on Tuesday includes a double-header between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. As for the other New York contender, the Mets are paying a visit to the team with the best record in baseball—the San Francisco Giants. Let’s take a look at the best such option for Mets-Giants, and be sure to also check out our full game preview for picks on the side and total.
New York Mets ML (+136)
Marcus Stroman Over 4.5 strikeouts (-108)
Pete Alonso to hit a home run (+350)
Parlay odds: +1306
Part of the value in same game parlays, of course, is that all of its components can be correlated if you so choose. That is the entire plan here, as Marcus Stroman mowing down San Francisco batters left and right plus Pete Alonso going deep would obviously work well with a New York win. Let’s break down each of the three legs one by one.
New York Mets ML (+136)
The Mets are in the midst of a brutal stretch with tons of games against the Giants and Dodgers, but Tuesday arguably presents them with their most favorable matchup in the last week. New York has basically been facing Cy Young-caliber pitching for a week straight. That won’t be the case in this one, as San Francisco is sending right-hander Logan Webb to the mound. Although Webb has pitched well in 2021, the sample size is small. Until now his lifetime ERA had been well over 5.00. Webb could regress back to his norm at any moment. The Mets know are countering with Stroman, who has been the ace of their staff ever since Jacob deGrom went on the injured list. Stroman’s 2.79 ERA in his first full season in the Big Apple has been exactly what the Mets have needed.
Marcus Stroman Over 4.5 strikeouts (-108)
Stroman has reached the 5-strikeout mark in each of his last 2 starts and in 3 of his last 5. This stretch includes an 8-strikeout performance his last time out against Washington (in just 5.1 innings, too) and a 7-strikeout effort last month against Cincinnati. The 30-year-old right-hander has not struck out fewer than 4 batters in a game since July 16. Meanwhile, perhaps the Giants’ only weakness in 2021 has been swinging and missing. They are 7th in Major League Baseball with 1,101 Ks on the season—a mere 1 behind Milwaukee for 6th.
Pete Alonso to hit a home run (+350)
Alonso has homered only twice in August, but he has 25 for the year and there is no reason why he can’t launch another one on Tuesday. Even though his HR numbers are down in the past two weeks, Alonso has hit safely in 3 of the last 4 contests. He has a pair of 3-hit performances dating back to last Tuesday. The 26-year-old first baseman is seeing the ball extremely well, so it’s only a matter of time before he leaves the yard again. Webb has surrendered a homer in 2 of his last 3 outings.
