Responsible Gambling

Updated July 26, 2026 · Money Maverick Sports

Sports betting is entertainment with a cost, and it should be sized so that losing is affordable and stopping is easy. For most people it is. For some it is not, and the difference is worth checking honestly rather than assuming.

Getting Help

If gambling has stopped being optional, help is free, confidential and available at any hour.

The helpline operates 24 hours a day in every state, is free, and connects to local resources. Most states also run their own council and helpline, and many operate a voluntary self-exclusion register covering all licensed operators in the state.

If you are unsure whether to call

Being unsure is a common reason people wait, and waiting is the part that tends to cost the most. A single conversation costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

Warning Signs

These are the signs clinicians and support organisations consistently identify. Any one of them is worth attention; several together is worth acting on.

Financial: betting money needed for bills, borrowing to bet, hiding losses, chasing losses with larger stakes, betting more than planned.

Behavioural: betting more often or on more sports than intended, being unable to stop after a set point, needing larger stakes for the same interest, repeated failed attempts to cut back.

Emotional: restlessness or irritability when not betting, betting to escape stress or low mood, relief rather than enjoyment when a bet wins, preoccupation between bets.

Relational: concealing activity from partners or family, lying about amounts, conflict about betting, withdrawing from activities you used to enjoy.

Two questions cover a great deal of ground: have you ever felt you needed to bet more and more, and have you ever lied to people close to you about how much you bet?

Tools That Create Real Limits

The useful principle is to make decisions while calm that bind while you are not.

Deposit limits. Every licensed United States sportsbook offers daily, weekly and monthly caps. Set them at signup. Increases typically carry a cooling-off delay, which is the feature rather than the inconvenience.

Loss limits and wager limits. Available at most operators, capping the amount lost or staked in a period.

Time-outs. A short self-imposed break, typically 24 hours to 30 days, after which the account reopens automatically.

Self-exclusion. A longer, harder-to-reverse block, often one year to lifetime, and in many states applied across every licensed operator at once.

Reality checks. Periodic on-screen reminders of session length and net position.

Removing payment methods. Deleting stored cards adds friction exactly where friction helps.

Blocking software. Third-party tools can block gambling sites at the device or network level.

What Betting Sensibly Looks Like

The money is entertainment money. Funded from discretionary income, and losing all of it changes nothing important.

Limits are set in advance. A bankroll, a unit size, and a point at which the day ends. See bankroll management.

Losing does not require a response. A losing day ends and the next day starts at normal stakes. See chasing and tilt.

Expectations are calibrated. Long losing runs are normal at any realistic win rate. Expecting them removes most of their emotional force. See variance and drawdowns.

It is not income. Almost nobody profits long term, and treating betting as a supplementary wage is the assumption behind most serious harm.

Stopping is easy. The clearest test available: if a month away would be difficult, that is worth taking seriously today.

This site sells analysis, not certainty, and it is not a solution to a financial problem. Nothing published here is a guarantee of profit — the honest version of what a record can and cannot show is in how to read a betting record.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I get help for problem gambling in the US?

The National Problem Gambling Helpline is available 24 hours a day at 1-800-522-4700 by call or text, free and confidential, in every state. It connects to local resources.

What are the main warning signs?

Betting money you need, borrowing to bet, hiding activity, needing larger stakes for the same interest, chasing losses, and being unable to stop at a point you set.

What is self-exclusion?

A voluntary block on your accounts, typically one year to lifetime, which in many states applies across every licensed operator in that state at once.

Can sports betting be a source of income?

For almost nobody. Treating it as a supplementary wage is the assumption behind most serious gambling harm. It should be funded from discretionary money you can afford to lose.

Sized To Be Affordable

Every play carries a stake in units, so the card fits a bankroll rather than dictating one.
