Same Game Parlays

Updated July 26, 2026 · Money Maverick Sports

A same game parlay combines multiple bets from one game. It is the most heavily marketed product in American sportsbooks and carries the largest margin of anything on the main menu — frequently 15 to 30%, sometimes more.

Why They Have To Be Priced Differently

A standard parlay multiplies independent probabilities. Legs from the same game are not independent: if a quarterback throws for 350 yards, his receivers probably had big games, and the total probably went over.

So books cannot use standard parlay maths. Instead they run a correlation model — often a simulation of the game — and price the combination from how often those outcomes co-occur in simulation. That model is proprietary, it is conservative, and the margin added on top is substantial.

The result is that a same game parlay's payout is not something you can check with arithmetic the way you can check a standard parlay. You are accepting the book's model output, with an unusually large margin attached, and no way to verify it.

Why The Payouts Look Better Than They Are

Correlation cuts both ways, and the marketing only shows one direction.

When you combine outcomes that go together, the true probability is higher than independence implies — so the fair payout is lower. Books display these as attractive multipliers because the number is still large in absolute terms, while the implied probability has been quietly raised well above fair.

The tell

Add a leg that is highly correlated with legs you already have and watch the payout barely move. That is the model saying the new leg adds almost no independent risk — while the book still takes margin on it.

Meanwhile, combinations that are negatively correlated get priced generously, which is the direction most bettors never explore, because negative correlation feels like betting against yourself.

The Structural Problems

Unverifiable pricing. You cannot compute a fair price without the correlation model, so you cannot know whether a given SGP is good value.

No line shopping. Each book's model differs, so the same combination cannot be meaningfully compared across books, removing the one reliable edge available in ordinary betting. See line shopping.

Prop-level vig, multiplied. Individual props already carry 6 to 12% hold. Combining several compounds it before the correlation margin is even applied.

Promotional targeting. Free bets and boosts are aimed disproportionately at SGPs, which tells you where the operator's margin is.

The Narrow Defensible Case

There is one: a coherent game-script thesis where the individual legs are each defensible and the correlation model is likely understating how tightly they go together.

Suppose you believe a team will trail badly and throw all game. Its receiving props going over, the opponent's rushing volume going up and the total going over are all part of the same story. If each leg is a bet you would place alone, the SGP expresses one opinion efficiently rather than stacking unrelated risks.

That is a real thing, and it is rare. It also still carries the correlation margin, so it needs a larger edge than a straight bet to be worthwhile. Treated as an occasional expression of a strong, specific read, an SGP is defensible. Treated as a daily product, it is the fastest way to lose money in betting that does not involve a casino floor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a same game parlay?

A parlay whose legs all come from one game. Because those outcomes are correlated, books price them from a proprietary simulation model rather than by multiplying independent probabilities.

Why are same game parlays bad value?

The hold is typically 15 to 30%, the pricing depends on a model you cannot see or verify, and you cannot line shop because every book's correlation model differs.

Why doesn't the payout increase much when I add a related leg?

Because the correlation model recognises the new leg adds little independent risk. The book still takes margin on it, so you are paying for a leg that barely changes your probability of winning.

Is there any good use for a same game parlay?

Occasionally, when you have a specific game-script thesis and each leg would be a defensible standalone bet. Even then the correlation margin means it needs a larger edge than a straight bet to be worth placing.

Verifiable Numbers Only

Every play has a price you can check and a book you can compare. No black-box pricing.
