Line Shopping
Updated July 26, 2026 · Money Maverick Sports
Line shopping means holding accounts at several sportsbooks and placing each bet wherever the number is best. It requires no analytical skill, it is available to everyone, and it is worth more than most bettors will ever add through better handicapping.
What It Is Worth
Two components: the price and the number.
Price. Consistently betting -105 instead of -110 lowers your break-even from 52.4% to 51.2%. That is 1.2 percentage points of win rate acquired for nothing, which is a larger gain than most people ever make to their handicapping.
Number. Getting -3 instead of -3.5 in football is worth roughly 4 percentage points of win probability on that bet. Getting +7 instead of +6.5 is worth about 2.5. Across a season these compound substantially.
| Improvement | Approximate season value |
|---|---|
| -110 to -105 on every bet | ~6 units |
| Half a point on 20% of bets | ~2 to 4 units |
| Both, combined | ~8 to 10 units |
For a bettor whose whole season profit might be 15 units, that is a large fraction of the result, obtained by clicking a different app.
How Many Accounts
Three is the practical minimum for meaningful benefit. Four to six captures most of what is available. Beyond eight, the marginal gain gets small relative to the administrative burden.
The mix matters more than the count. Ideally you want at least one low-margin, high-limit operation whose numbers lead the market, plus several retail books whose numbers lag and whose promotions are worth something. Books that are slow to move are the most valuable ones to hold, because that is where stale numbers live.
Practical notes: fund accounts before you need them, keep a written record of which book has which bet, and expect some accounts to be limited over time if you win. See account limits.
Doing It Quickly
The obstacle is friction, and friction is what makes people stop.
Use an odds comparison screen. Several free services display every book's number on one page. Checking takes seconds rather than opening six apps.
Check the number before deciding the bet. A play that requires -3 is not a play at -3.5, so the shopping step belongs before the commitment, not after.
Know your own thresholds. If you have written down that a play needs +6.5 or better, shopping becomes a lookup rather than a judgement call.
Never place a bet without knowing what the other books are showing. It takes ten seconds and it is the highest hourly rate in betting.
Where Shopping Matters Most
Player props. The widest dispersion of any market. The same line can differ by a full unit between books, which is a different bet rather than a different price. See player props.
Alternate and derivative markets. First-half lines, team totals and period markets get less attention, so numbers drift further apart.
College sports. Sixty games on a Saturday means desks cannot maintain them all equally. See college football picks.
Football key numbers. The difference between 3 and 3.5 is large enough that finding the better side of it is often the whole edge. See key numbers.
Main lines in major markets are the most tightly aligned, which is exactly why the value in shopping concentrates everywhere else.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is line shopping worth?
Moving from -110 to -105 pricing lowers your break-even by 1.2 percentage points, and half-points on key numbers add more. Together, roughly 8 to 10 units over a 500-bet season.
How many sportsbook accounts do I need?
Three is the practical minimum, four to six captures most of the available value. The mix matters more than the count — at least one sharp low-margin book plus several slower retail ones.
Which markets benefit most from shopping?
Player props, derivative markets like first-half lines and team totals, college sports, and any football line near 3 or 7. Main lines in major markets are the most tightly aligned.
Is line shopping really better than improving my handicapping?
For most bettors, yes — because it is achievable. Gaining 1.2 percentage points of break-even by clicking a different app is more than most people ever add through analysis.
