NFL Key Numbers

Updated July 26, 2026 · Money Maverick Sports

Football scores in threes and sevens, so football margins do too. Roughly a quarter of NFL games are decided by exactly 3 or exactly 7 points, which makes the spread a lumpy distribution rather than a smooth one — and that lumpiness is the foundation of most football betting technique.

The Distribution

Approximate share of NFL games decided by each margin.
MarginShare of games
3~15%
7~9%
6~6%
10~6%
4~5%
14~5%
1~4%
2~4%
5~4%

3 is roughly three times more common than 5, and it is not close. A field goal is the most common way to break a tie, and a touchdown with a conversion is the second most common decisive margin. Everything about football spread betting follows from those two facts.

Secondary numbers — 10, 14, 6 and 4 — matter less but are still noticeably more common than their neighbours, since they represent combinations of the same scoring units.

What Half-Points Are Worth

Approximate win-probability value of a half-point.
CrossingValueEquivalent price
2.5 to 3~4 points~25 cents
3 to 3.5~4 points~25 cents
6.5 to 7~2.5 points~15 cents
7 to 7.5~2.5 points~15 cents
9.5 to 10~1.5 points~10 cents
4.5 to 5~1.3 points~8 cents
11.5 to 12~0.7 points~5 cents

This is why a book will hold a line at -3 and move the price to -125 or -135 rather than going to -3.5. Crossing 3 is a bigger concession than charging a quarter more juice.

The practical rule

Getting -2.5 instead of -3, or +3 instead of +2.5, is worth about as much as a full point elsewhere on the board. Treat those half-points as the most valuable real estate in football betting.

What This Changes About How You Bet

Line shopping matters disproportionately near 3 and 7. A book at +3 while others show +2.5 is a materially different bet, not a slightly better one. See line shopping.

Buying points is good value only across key numbers. Ten cents to move from -3.5 to -3 is a bargain; ten cents to move from -8.5 to -8 is not. See buying points.

Teasers work because of this and nothing else. A six-point teaser crossing both 3 and 7 captures a disproportionate share of outcomes, which is why the strategy exists in football and nowhere else. See teasers explained.

Middles are worth more when they span key numbers. A middle from +7 to -3 covers 4, 5 and 6; extending it to cover 3 or 7 is much more valuable. See hedging and middling.

Waiting can be correct. If a line sits at -3.5 and you want -3, the value of waiting for a move sometimes exceeds the risk of the number going the other way.

Totals Have Weaker Key Numbers

Football totals cluster mildly around 41, 44 and 47, because those are common combinations of scoring units. The effect is real but far smaller than the side's clustering on 3.

Practically, a half-point on a total is worth slightly more across 41, 44 and 47 than elsewhere, but nothing like the four percentage points a half-point across 3 is worth on the side. Buying points on totals is rarely justified. See NFL totals.

Where Key Numbers Do And Do Not Apply

College football: same scoring structure, so the same clustering exists, though the wider range of margins dilutes it. A 3-point margin still occurs far more often than a 5-point one. See college football betting.

Basketball: no key numbers. Baskets are worth 2 and 3 and there are many of them, so margins distribute smoothly. Teaser strategy does not transfer, buying points is poor value, and half-points are worth roughly the same anywhere. See NBA against the spread.

Baseball and hockey: fixed 1.5 spreads, so the concept does not apply in the same form. The relevant clustering is around 1-run and 1-goal games, which is what makes run lines and puck lines behave the way they do. See run lines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is 3 the most important number in NFL betting?

Because a field goal is the most common way to decide a close game. Roughly 15% of NFL games finish with a 3-point margin, about three times the rate of a 5-point margin.

How much is a half-point worth in the NFL?

About 4 percentage points of win probability across 3, about 2.5 across 7, and roughly 1 point elsewhere. That is why books move the price rather than the spread when sitting on 3.

Do key numbers exist in basketball?

No. Basketball margins are distributed smoothly, so no half-point is worth materially more than another. Teaser strategy and point-buying logic from football do not transfer.

Are there key numbers on totals?

Mildly, around 41, 44 and 47 in football. The effect is real but far smaller than the side's clustering, and it rarely justifies buying points.
