Injury Report Betting
Updated July 26, 2026 · Money Maverick Sports
No information moves betting lines faster than injury news. Which means being fast is rarely the edge — by the time a report is public, the number has moved. The edge is in understanding what an absence is actually worth, which is a question most bettors answer badly.
Reading The Designations
Each league reports differently, and the vocabulary matters.
NFL. Out means out. Doubtful means very unlikely, historically under 10%. Questionable is genuinely uncertain, roughly a coin flip. Practice participation reports through the week are more informative than the designation itself — a player limited on Wednesday and full on Friday is trending towards playing.
NBA. Reports are released closer to tip-off and change frequently. "Game-time decision" means exactly that, and the market often does not settle until an hour before. Rest designations are mixed in with genuine injuries. See back-to-backs.
MLB. Less relevant day to day except for the starting pitcher and catcher. Lineup cards posted a few hours before first pitch are the meaningful information. See starting pitchers.
NHL. Goaltender confirmation is the single most important piece of information in the sport, and morning skate reports are where it comes from.
Replacement Quality Over Star Quality
The standard mistake is valuing an absence by how good the missing player is. The correct measure is the gap between the missing player and whoever takes those minutes.
An elite player replaced by a competent backup may be worth two points. A merely good player replaced by someone genuinely unable to do the job may be worth four. The public reasons from name recognition, which is exactly why these situations get mispriced in both directions.
| Position | Typical value |
|---|---|
| Starting quarterback | 3 to 7 points |
| Elite pass rusher | 1 to 2 points |
| Top receiver | 0.5 to 1.5 points |
| Offensive tackle | 0.5 to 1.5 points |
| Running back | 0 to 1 point |
| Most defensive backs | 0 to 1 point |
Quarterback dwarfs everything, which is why NFL lines move more on one position than all others combined. Running back absences are consistently overpriced by public money and consistently underpriced in their prop implications, since the touches simply move to someone else. See power ratings.
Second-Order Effects
An absence changes more than one team's strength rating.
Usage redistribution. The touches, targets or minutes go somewhere, which creates prop opportunities more reliably than it creates side opportunities. See player props.
Scheme change. Teams adapt. A team without its starting quarterback often becomes more run-heavy, which changes the total and the game script.
Total implications. Losing an offensive player lowers a total; losing a defensive player raises it. Both effects are smaller than the side effect and less thoroughly priced.
Correlated absences. Two starters out on the same unit is worth more than the sum of the parts, because depth runs out.
Not on the side, which moves immediately, but in the props and totals that follow from the same information and move more slowly.
Practical Discipline
Do not bet before a ruling you need. A position whose value depends on an unresolved designation is a coin flip dressed as a handicap.
Know the announcement schedule. NFL final reports, NBA injury report deadlines, MLB lineup postings, NHL morning skates. Being present at the right time is most of the practical skill.
Expect overreaction on names. A star absence often moves a line further than the replacement gap justifies, particularly for skill positions.
Read the beat coverage. Local reporters supply detail hours before national aggregation, and that gap is where whatever timing edge exists lives.
Accept that you are usually late. Which is fine. The reliable edge is in valuation, not speed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does 'questionable' mean in the NFL?
Genuine uncertainty, historically around a coin flip. Doubtful means under 10%, and out means out. Weekly practice participation is more informative than the designation itself.
How much is a starting quarterback worth?
Three to seven points depending on the gap to the backup — more than every other position combined, which is why NFL lines move most on that one ruling.
Why are running back injuries overpriced?
Because the touches simply move to another back, so team strength barely changes. Public money reasons from name recognition, which moves the side more than the replacement gap justifies.
Where is the value in injury news if the line moves instantly?
In the second-order markets. Props and totals follow from the same information and move more slowly, and in valuation — judging whether the side's move was the right size.
