MLB Starting Pitchers

Updated July 26, 2026 · Money Maverick Sports

A baseball moneyline can swing 60 or 70 cents on a starting pitcher change. No other individual in American team sport moves a betting number that far, which makes evaluating starters the central skill in baseball handicapping.

Why ERA Is The Wrong Statistic

Earned run average measures what happened, including a great deal that the pitcher did not control: defence behind him, ballpark, sequencing luck, and the timing of hits.

Over a full season ERA is somewhat informative. Over ten or fifteen starts it is mostly noise, and it is the statistic most likely to be quoted in a broadcast graphic, which means the market has already absorbed whatever narrative it supports.

What actually predicts future performance.

Strikeout rateHighStabilises fastest, most under pitcher control
Walk rateHighStable and directly controlled
Ground ball rateModerate to highStable, limits extra-base damage

The pattern: statistics measuring what a pitcher does to batters predict; statistics measuring outcomes after the ball is in play do not.

Beyond The Headline Numbers

Velocity trend. A fastball down 1.5 mph from a pitcher's own baseline is one of the more reliable warning signs available, often preceding both poor performance and injury.

Pitch mix changes. A pitcher who has added or abandoned a pitch is a different pitcher than his season line describes.

Recent workload. Innings totals, pitch counts and days of rest. A starter coming off 115 pitches on short rest is not the same asset.

Times through the order. Most starters degrade noticeably the third time facing a lineup, which is why first-five-innings markets often price a starter more purely than the full game does. See first five innings.

Handedness splits. Real but frequently overstated. Platoon splits need large samples to be trusted, and a single season of them usually is not enough.

Listed Pitcher Rules

Baseball bets can be placed with or without a listed-pitcher requirement, and the distinction is not cosmetic.

Listed pitchers. The bet voids if either named starter does not pitch. This is the correct default for almost every bet, because the pitcher is most of your reasoning.

Action. The bet stands regardless of who starts, with the price adjusted. You are accepting whatever the team decides to do, which is rarely what you intended to bet on.

One-way listings. Some books allow specifying one pitcher rather than both.

Default to listed

If a projected starter is scratched and your bet was placed as action, you now hold a position built on a pitcher who is not playing, at a price adjusted by the book rather than by you.

How Much A Starter Is Actually Worth

An ace against a replacement-level starter is worth roughly 40 to 70 cents on a moneyline, or about 0.6 to 1.0 runs on a total. That is enormous relative to any other single-player effect in American sport.

It is also frequently overpriced. Public money follows recognisable names, so elite starters at home are among the most consistently shaded prices in baseball. A bettor's edge is usually not in identifying that the ace is better — the market knows — but in judging whether 60 cents is too much for it, or in spotting an anonymous starter whose underlying rates are far better than his ERA.

The rest of a projection sits on top: bullpen availability, lineup composition, park and weather. Detail is in MLB picks and park factors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is ERA a bad statistic for betting?

Because it includes defence, ballpark and sequencing luck, none of which the pitcher controls. Over ten or fifteen starts it is mostly noise, while strikeout and walk rates are stable and predictive.

Which pitcher statistics predict best?

Strikeout rate and walk rate first, then ground ball rate. Anything measuring outcomes after the ball is in play — BABIP, home run per fly ball, ERA in small samples — predicts poorly.

What does 'listed pitchers' mean on a baseball bet?

The bet voids if either named starter does not pitch. It should be the default, because a bet placed as action stands with whoever starts, at a price the book adjusts rather than you.

How much does a starting pitcher move a line?

An ace against a replacement-level starter is worth roughly 40 to 70 cents on the moneyline and 0.6 to 1.0 runs on a total — the largest single-player effect in American team sport.
