Pitcher strikeout props are the most projectable number in baseball betting, because the two things that determine them — how many batters a pitcher faces and how often he strikes them out — are both more stable than almost anything else in the sport.
Hitter props are the opposite: a hitter gets four plate appearances, and four trials of a 30% event is close to a coin flip dressed up as analysis. The two markets deserve very different treatment.
Projecting A Strikeout Prop
The calculation has three inputs and each is knowable in advance.
Batters faced. A function of expected innings and expected efficiency. A starter on a normal rest cycle with no recent injury and no pitch-count restriction typically faces 22 to 26 batters. Team-specific bullpen usage patterns matter here: some clubs pull starters at 90 pitches as policy.
Pitcher strikeout rate. Use recent form weighted against season rate, and be careful about the sample. Strikeout rate stabilises faster than almost any pitching statistic, so even six or seven starts carries real signal — more than ERA over a full season.
Opposing lineup strikeout rate. The adjustment the market prices least completely. Lineups differ enormously in how often they strike out, and a high-strikeout lineup against a high-strikeout pitcher is multiplicative, not additive. Handedness splits sharpen this further.
24 batters faced × a 27% strikeout rate against a lineup that strikes out 9% more than league average gives roughly 24 × 0.294, or about 7.1 projected strikeouts. Against a posted 6.5 with a fair price, that is a play. Against a posted 7.5, it is not.
Why Hitter Props Are Harder
A hitter gets four plate appearances, sometimes three. Any prop resolving on four trials of an event that happens 25 to 35% of the time has enormous variance relative to any edge you could have.
That does not make hitter props unbettable, but it narrows where they make sense:
- Total bases and hits allowed over longer horizons are more tractable than single-game hit props.
- Extreme handedness mismatches occasionally create genuine edges, particularly against pitchers with severe splits.
- Lineup position changes matter: a hitter moved from seventh to second gains roughly half a plate appearance per game, which the market does not always reprice.
- Home run props are almost pure variance and should be treated as entertainment rather than analysis, notwithstanding the park and wind adjustments that genuinely apply.
Where The Market Lags
Lineup strikeout profile. The single biggest recurring edge. Books adjust for the pitcher thoroughly and for the opposing lineup's contact tendencies loosely.
Confirmed lineups. When two high-strikeout regulars sit and two contact hitters replace them, the strikeout prop should move and often does not, or moves late.
Weather and umpire. A large-zone umpire adds strikeouts. Cold weather modestly suppresses offence including contact quality. Neither is fully priced into props.
Cross-book variation. Strikeout props routinely differ by half a strikeout between books, and half a strikeout is a large fraction of any realistic edge. Shopping is mandatory. See line shopping.
Sizing And Timing
Half a unit is standard for a strikeout prop, one unit when a confirmed lineup change has left a number clearly stale. Limits are low, so props are a volume market rather than a place to press.
Timing is after lineups post, with one exception: if the projection edge comes from the pitcher rather than the lineup, betting early can be better because strikeout props sometimes drift towards the pitcher's reputation during the day.
