Every basketball total decomposes into two things: how many possessions the game contains, and how efficiently each is used. Pace is one of the most stable statistics in sport. Shooting is one of the least. Understanding that asymmetry is most of what separates a projection from an impression.
The Framework
Estimate possessions, estimate points per possession for each team, multiply, add.
A game between a team averaging 100 possessions per 48 minutes and one averaging 96 projects around 98. If both teams score about 1.15 points per possession, the projection is roughly 98 × 1.15 × 2 = 225.
Pace between two teams tends towards the average of their individual paces, with a modest pull towards whichever team controls the ball more. It is not simply the faster team's number, and it is not the slower team's either.
The reason this framework is worth the effort is that it makes your disagreement with the number explicit. A projection of 225 against a posted 229 is a specific claim about possessions or efficiency, which can be examined and can be wrong in an identifiable way.
Pace Is Stable, Shooting Is Not

The last row is the most exploitable line in the table. Defences influence how many threes are attempted and from where, but they exert very little control over whether those attempts go in. A team whose defensive numbers look elite mainly because opponents have shot poorly from three is a team about to regress.
When a team's recent totals have run high or low, check whether three-point variance explains it. If it does, regress towards the mean rather than extrapolating.
What Actually Changes A Projection
Rotation changes. A starter out shifts minutes to bench players with different efficiency and often different pace.
Rest and schedule. Second nights of back-to-backs and fourth games in six nights reduce defensive intensity and often raise scoring while lowering pace slightly. See back-to-backs.
Blowout risk. A large projected margin means garbage time, which raises pace and lowers efficiency in ways that partly offset. Large spreads make totals harder to project, not easier.
Foul environment. Free throws stop the clock and are efficient points. Officiating crew tendencies are a small but genuine input.
Late-game situations. Intentional fouling in close games adds points; a comfortable lead subtracts them. Which is why first-half totals are sometimes cleaner bets than full-game totals. See NBA totals.
The Trap Of Recent Scores
The most common way basketball totals get bet badly is reasoning from the last few final scores.
Four consecutive overs tells you about four specific opponents, four specific venues, four specific shooting nights and four specific rotations. It does not describe a property of the team that will persist into a fifth game.
Worse, the market has already moved on that information. A team whose recent games went over will have elevated totals posted, which means the recency you noticed is priced and you are paying for it.
The projectable inputs — pace, attempt rates, free throw rate, turnover rate, rotation status — are less exciting and are where the actual disagreements with the market live.
