Every NBA player prop decomposes into three factors: how many minutes the player is on the floor, how much of the offence runs through him while he is there, and how efficiently he converts it. Minutes and usage are far more forecastable than efficiency, which is why the work belongs there.

Minutes First
Minutes are the largest input and the most predictable, because coaches are creatures of habit. A player's minutes depend on his role, the game's expected competitiveness, whether it is a back-to-back, and who else is available.
Things that move minutes materially:
- Blowout risk. A star on a heavy favourite in a game projected to be a 15-point win plays fewer fourth-quarter minutes. This works against overs on stars in lopsided games and is chronically underpriced.
- Back-to-back load management. Veterans get shorter runs on the second night, and sometimes sit entirely.
- Foul trouble propensity. A player who averages high foul rates against a team that attacks the rim has real minutes risk.
- Teammate absences. The big one. A rotation player can go from 22 minutes to 34 when a starter sits, which is a more than 50% increase in every volume prop he has.
When a starter is ruled out, the market moves his own props off the board instantly. It is slower and less accurate about raising the numbers of the three or four players who absorb his minutes and shots.
Usage, And Where It Actually Goes
Usage rate measures the share of a team's possessions a player finishes. When a high-usage player sits, roughly his entire share redistributes — but not evenly, and not always to the obvious replacement.
The redistribution follows role rather than depth chart position. A missing primary ball-handler's usage goes largely to whoever else can create, which might be a wing rather than the backup point guard. A missing interior scorer's usage tends to spread more broadly. Understanding which players in a rotation can actually absorb creation responsibility is the difference between a good prop projection and a guess.
Assist props are the most sensitive to this and the most rewarding when correct: a secondary creator who inherits ball-handling duties often sees his assist number move by two or more, against a market adjustment of half an assist.

The pattern is consistent: props resolving on many small events are projectable, and props resolving on a handful of binary events are not.
Timing And Sizing
Two windows matter. The first is immediately after a ruling drops, when teammate numbers are stale — this is where the best prices are, and it lasts minutes rather than hours. The second is once the market has settled, when the remaining edges are smaller but the information is complete.
Sizing is half a unit standard, one unit when a confirmed absence has left a number visibly wrong. Prop limits are low, which caps the downside of being wrong and also caps the upside of being right, so props are a volume market.
