NFL Over Under Picks
Updated July 26, 2026 · Money Maverick Sports
NFL totals attract less money and less attention than sides, which makes them measurably softer. They also reward a different kind of work: instead of asking who is better, you are asking how many plays this game will contain and how efficient each of them will be.
Two teams can be evenly matched and produce a game that finishes 45-42 or 10-6. The side tells you nothing about which. That is the gap totals betting lives in.
Projecting A Total From First Principles
A game total is the product of two things: how many possessions the game contains, and how many points each possession is worth to each team.
Possessions are driven by pace, which in football means seconds per play and how often each offence stays on the field. A fast, pass-heavy offence facing another fast offence produces meaningfully more possessions than two run-first teams grinding clock. Play-clock tendency is one of the most underrated inputs in football handicapping because it compounds — two extra possessions per team at around two points a possession is eight points of total.
Points per possession comes from offensive efficiency against defensive efficiency, adjusted for the opponents each has faced. The important discipline here is opponent adjustment: a defence that has faced three of the worst offences in the league looks far better than it is, and the market is slow to correct for that in September and October.
Multiply projected possessions per team by projected points per possession, double it, and compare with the posted number. If your projection is more than three points from the market, look for the reason before you look for the bet.
Wind Is The Only Weather That Matters
Cold does not move NFL totals much. Rain barely moves them. Snow is mostly aesthetic. Wind moves them a great deal, and the market prices it late and imperfectly.
The mechanism is specific: sustained wind above roughly 15 mph degrades the deep passing game and field goal accuracy, both of which are high-efficiency scoring sources. Above 20 mph the effect is severe, and games become run-heavy grinds where drives stall inside field goal range instead of finishing.
The betting angle is timing. Forecasts firm up in the 24 to 48 hours before kickoff, and the total moves before the side does. There is frequently a window where the wind is known but not fully priced, and it is one of the cleanest recurring edges in football. Detail on the weather betting page.
Why Unders Are Structurally Cheaper
Recreational money leans heavily towards overs. Rooting for scoring is more enjoyable than rooting against it, and a bettor with no strong opinion defaults to the over more often than the under. Books shade to that flow.
The result is a small but persistent price advantage on unders, which shows up most strongly in exactly the games with the most public attention: primetime, divisional rivalries, and any game featuring a high-profile quarterback. It is not large enough to bet blind, but it means an under that your projection likes is usually a slightly better bet than an over your projection likes by the same margin.
The related trap is the alternate-total shading around key totals. Football totals cluster on 41, 44 and 47 for the same quantised-scoring reasons that make 3 and 7 matter on sides, and crossing those numbers is worth more than crossing 42 or 45.
Situations That Move Totals More Than The Market Thinks
- Backup quarterback. Usually moves the total down more than the side, because a conservative game plan reduces possessions as well as efficiency.
- Missing offensive line starters. Rarely priced properly, and the effect on scoring is larger than on the spread.
- Two bad defences. The market is oddly reluctant to post very high totals, which occasionally leaves genuine value on overs in games between two poor defensive teams.
- Divisional familiarity. Tends to suppress scoring slightly, particularly in second meetings late in the season.
- Elimination games in December. A team with nothing to play for often produces a low-variance, low-scoring game.
- Dome to outdoor transitions. An offence built on timing and speed loses more in bad conditions than a run-first team does.
As always, these confirm or veto a number edge rather than creating one. A situational angle without a projection disagreement is a story, not a bet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are NFL totals easier to beat than spreads?
Generally yes, marginally. Totals attract less money and less analytical attention than sides, so more stale numbers survive. They also require different work — projecting possessions and efficiency rather than comparing team strength.
At what wind speed should I bet an NFL under?
Sustained wind above roughly 15 mph starts to matter, and above 20 mph the effect on deep passing and field goals is severe. The edge is in the timing: forecasts firm up in the last two days and the market does not always fully price them before kickoff.
Why do unders tend to offer better value?
Because recreational money leans towards overs, so books shade prices in that direction. The advantage is small and does not justify betting unders blind, but it means an under your projection likes is usually priced slightly better than a comparable over.
Which NFL total numbers are key numbers?
41, 44 and 47 are the most common clusters, for the same quantised-scoring reasons that make 3 and 7 matter on spreads. Crossing those numbers when buying or shopping is worth more than crossing the numbers between them.
