MLB Picks Today — August 4, 2026
Updated August 4, 2026 · Money Maverick Sports
Tuesday's board is uniform in shape: every game carries a 1.5-run line, so the entire slate turns on whether favorites can separate by two runs rather than just win. Moneylines range from near pick'em (Blue Jays +111 at Astros -130) to lopsided (Rangers -198, Dodgers -206), and totals stretch from 7.5 up to an outlying 11 in Colorado. The gap between each moneyline and its run line is the number worth studying before the total.

The Card On Aug 4
Baseball is a volume sport. Fifteen games a day means more chances to be right and far more chances to overplay, so sizing matters more here than in any other league.
No graded plays were published on this page for August 4, 2026. Members receive the full card — every play, the write-up behind it and the recommended unit sizing — before the numbers move, and every result is posted publicly afterwards on the records page whether it won or lost.

Game-By-Game Previews
Each read below is drafted by our preview engine from the consensus numbers on this board and nothing else, then filtered before publication: it cannot cite an injury, a record or a statistic, because it is not given any, and language that promises a result is rejected outright. They are a starting point for your own handicapping, not a substitute for it. The plays we actually stake are on the card above.
Every number quoted in these reads is the one that was on the board on August 4, 2026. Nothing here has been revised with hindsight, and nothing here reflects the current market.
Los Angeles Angels at Baltimore Orioles
Card focus
MLB · Tue 6:36 PM ET · Orioles -1.5 · O/U 8.5 · ML Angels +130 / Orioles -150
Baltimore -150 on the moneyline against a -1.5 run line means the market expects the Orioles to win outright more often than they win by two. Any single-run Baltimore victory cashes the Angels at +1.5 while losing the moneyline bettor nothing extra. That gap is the whole conversation here — the run line is really a bet on margin, not on winner. The 8.5 total sits in the middle of tonight's range, offering no strong lean either way at this number.
Athletics at Cincinnati Reds
Card focus
MLB · Tue 6:40 PM ET · Reds -1.5 · O/U 9 · ML Athletics +115 / Reds -130
Cincinnati -130 with a -1.5 line is a modest gap, meaning the market isn't convinced the Reds separate by two runs much more often than they win by one. That keeps the Athletics price on the run line reasonable relative to the moneyline dog at +115. The 9.0 total is on the higher side of tonight's slate, which matters more for the run line here than usual — more scoring generally produces more multi-run margins for either side.
New York Mets at Cleveland Guardians
Card focus
MLB · Tue 6:40 PM ET · Guardians -1.5 · O/U 7.5 · ML Mets +128 / Guardians -150
Cleveland -150 against a -1.5 line again puts the emphasis on margin. The Mets at +128 need only to avoid a two-run loss to cash the run line, a lower bar than winning outright. With the total at 7.5, the lowest number on the board tonight, single-run finishes become more plausible by construction, which tends to favor the underdog side of a -1.5 line over the moneyline favorite.
Washington Nationals at Philadelphia Phillies
MLB · Tue 6:40 PM ET · Phillies -1.5 · O/U 9 · ML Nationals +210 / Phillies -250
Philadelphia at -250 is the largest moneyline favorite gap paired with the standard -1.5 line, meaning the market sees a wide talent gap but still prices the two-run margin as its own separate question. Washington at +210 has real value if Philadelphia's edge shows up mostly in one-run games. The total of 9.0 leaves room for scoring that could work against a clean two-run Phillies cover even in a comfortable win.
St. Louis Cardinals at New York Yankees
MLB · Tue 7:06 PM ET · Yankees -1.5 · O/U 8 · ML Cardinals +145 / Yankees -170
New York -170 versus a -1.5 line is a middling gap on this slate, suggesting the market splits its confidence between an outright Yankees win and a two-run Yankees win. St. Louis at +145 only needs to keep it within one run. The total sits at 8.0, tighter than most of tonight's games, which narrows the path to the kind of blowout scoring that makes a two-run cover comfortable rather than contested.
Chicago White Sox at Boston Red Sox
MLB · Tue 7:11 PM ET · Sox -1.5 · O/U 9 · ML Sox +112 / Sox -130
Boston -130 is one of the smaller favorite prices on the board tonight, and it still carries the standard -1.5 run line. That combination puts real weight on the Red Sox needing to win by more than a single run, a tougher ask than the moneyline alone implies. Chicago at +112 is priced close to even money straight up. The 9.0 total gives both directions of the run line some scoring room to work with.
Miami Marlins at Atlanta Braves
MLB · Tue 7:16 PM ET · Braves -1.5 · O/U 9 · ML Marlins +128 / Braves -150
Atlanta -150 against -1.5 mirrors several other lines tonight, where the moneyline gap is moderate but the run line demands a cleaner two-run outcome. Miami at +128 covers on anything but a multi-run Atlanta win. The 9.0 total is on the higher end of the slate, and higher-scoring environments tend to produce more two-run margins, which is the detail that actually separates the run line price from the moneyline price here.
Pittsburgh Pirates at Milwaukee Brewers
MLB · Tue 7:40 PM ET · Brewers -1.5 · O/U 7.5 · ML Pirates +139 / Brewers -160
Milwaukee -160 with a -1.5 line puts a fairly strong lean on the board, but the 7.5 total, tied for the lowest tonight, cuts against that lean somewhat. Lower-scoring games compress margins toward one run more often, which favors Pittsburgh at +139 on the run line even in games the Brewers win outright. The total here is arguably the more interesting number relative to the size of the favorite.
Minnesota Twins at Kansas City Royals
MLB · Tue 7:41 PM ET · Twins -1.5 · O/U 9 · ML Twins -145 / Royals +125
Twins is only -1.5 against Royals, which is the market saying it expects a one-score game and leaning barely at all. 9 is the posted total. Comparing it against what you think the game looks like is usually a cleaner decision than picking a side this close. Moneyline consensus is Twins -145 / Royals +125. None of that is a recommendation — it is what the price implies. Check the current number before 7:41 PM ET and decide from there.
Los Angeles Dodgers at Chicago Cubs
MLB · Tue 8:06 PM ET · Dodgers -1.5 · O/U 9 · ML Dodgers -206 / Cubs +173
Los Angeles at -206 is among the heaviest favorites on the slate, and pairing that with the standard -1.5 line means the market is pricing a two-run Dodgers win as close to expected rather than exceptional. Chicago at +173 offers value specifically in the scenario where a Dodgers win stays to a single run. The 9.0 total supports enough scoring that margin, not just winner, is the live question tonight.
San Francisco Giants at Texas Rangers
MLB · Tue 8:06 PM ET · Rangers -1.5 · O/U 7.5 · ML Giants +168 / Rangers -198
Texas -198 against -1.5 is a strong lean toward a multi-run Rangers win, and the total sitting at just 7.5 — tied for the slate's lowest — works somewhat against that. Lower totals tend to produce tighter final margins, which is exactly the terrain where San Francisco at +168 has its best shot at cashing the run line even in a losing effort.
Toronto Blue Jays at Houston Astros
MLB · Tue 8:10 PM ET · Astros -1.5 · O/U 8.5 · ML Jays +111 / Astros -130
Houston -130 is a modest favorite price paired with the usual -1.5 line, meaning the market isn't strongly convinced a Houston win separates by two runs more often than it doesn't. Toronto at +111 is priced almost even money straight up. The 8.5 total sits mid-slate, leaving the run line as the more debatable number here relative to the closer moneyline.
Tampa Bay Rays at Colorado Rockies
MLB · Tue 8:41 PM ET · Rays -1.5 · O/U 11 · ML Rays -145 / Rockies +125
Tampa Bay -145 on the road against a -1.5 line comes with the highest total on the board tonight at 11.0. That combination is worth noting — a high total raises the odds of a multi-run margin either way, which cuts toward the favorite covering but also raises variance for Colorado at +125 to hang around or outscore in a track-meet environment.
San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks
MLB · Tue 9:41 PM ET · Diamondbacks -1.5 · O/U 8.5 · ML Padres +114 / Diamondbacks -131
Arizona -131 with a -1.5 line is one of the tighter favorite prices tonight, again putting real weight on the two-run threshold rather than treating it as a formality. San Diego at +114 is priced close to a coinflip straight up, which makes the extra run in Arizona's favor the more debatable part of this line. The 8.5 total is right in the middle of tonight's spread.
Detroit Tigers at Seattle Mariners
MLB · Tue 9:41 PM ET · Mariners -1.5 · O/U 8 · ML Tigers +122 / Mariners -142
The consensus has Mariners -1.5, a margin narrow enough that the difference between books matters more than the difference between the teams. Totals are where a close game gets interesting, and this one is posted at 8. Moneyline consensus is Tigers +122 / Mariners -142. None of that is a recommendation — it is what the price implies. Check the current number before 9:41 PM ET and decide from there.
How To Read Today's MLB Numbers
Baseball prices differently from football, and reading the board above the way you would read an NFL slate is the most common mistake a crossover bettor makes.
- The moneyline is the real market. Run lines exist, but the -1.5 is a derivative of a price that is already tight. Start with the moneyline and the implied probability it represents.
- Ten cents is enormous. The difference between -140 and -150 on a side you bet all season is the difference between a winning year and a flat one. This is the sport where line shopping pays the most.
- Totals carry more information than sides. A baseball total moves on pitching, park and conditions, and the market's estimate of all three is knowable in advance. See park factors.
- Lineups and pitching changes reprice everything. A confirmed scratch can move a total a full run. Numbers posted this morning are a starting point, not a settled price.
Why Baseball Punishes Overbetting
A full MLB slate offers fifteen games and forty-five markets before you reach props. That volume is the sport's opportunity and its trap: the same bettor who would take two NFL plays a week will happily take eight baseball plays a night, and the bankroll cannot absorb the correlation or the variance.
A baseball day should look like a normal day, not a bigger one. If a full slate routinely produces more plays than a thin one, the selection process is responding to availability rather than to price.
The mathematics behind that is in variance and drawdowns: a 55% bettor still loses six of ten some weeks, and the only thing that decides whether that is survivable is how much was on each one.
What Makes Today's Card
Every MLB play on the card has to clear the vig on its own merits — our price on the game differs from the market's by more than it costs to get on. Starting pitching and the total do most of that work, which is why the card leans toward totals and first-five-innings markets more than most services do.
The first five innings page explains why removing a bullpen from the equation often prices better than betting the full game, and the record is posted publicly either way.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are the odds on this page still available to bet?
No. Every spread, total and price here is the market snapshot captured on August 4, 2026, the day this edition published. The games have been played and the numbers are a historical record. For the current board see mlb picks today.
Why keep old editions online?
Because a service that deletes its old boards is asking to be taken on trust. Keeping each edition exactly as it published means the numbers we posted before the games can be checked against what happened after them, and the graded plays are totalled on the records page whether the month was good or bad.
Were the plays on this card graded?
Plays are graded once the games finish, and the result is shown on the card above — win, loss or push. A play still marked pending on an old edition is one that has not been settled yet; it is never removed. Past results do not predict future results.
