Best Bets Today: August 29, 2026
Every league in season on one board, previews of the games the card is built around, and the standard a play has to clear — refreshed every morning.
Updated August 29, 2026 · Money Maverick Sports
Saturday's board is heavy on MLB run lines layered on tight moneylines, plus three NCAAF numbers that range from a one-score game to a near-maximum spread. The recurring theme in the baseball slate is the gap between the -1.5 run line and the moneyline price on each side, which tells you how much of the number is about win probability versus projected margin. On the football side, the wider the spread, the more the total and the moneyline start doing the real work.
Numbers below are the median across 11 US sportsbooks surveyed when this edition published, not one book's opinion. Lines move all day — confirm the current price at your own book before betting, and read line shopping for why the half point you give away is the most expensive habit in betting.
Today's Card
A best bet is not the game we like most. It is the game where the gap between our number and the market's is largest relative to what it costs to get on.
Today's graded plays have not been published on this page. Members receive the full card — every play, the write-up behind it and the recommended unit sizing — before the numbers move, and every result is posted publicly afterwards on the records page whether it won or lost.

Game-By-Game Previews
Each read below is drafted by our preview engine from the consensus numbers on this board and nothing else, then filtered before publication: it cannot cite an injury, a record or a statistic, because it is not given any, and language that promises a result is rejected outright. They are a starting point for your own handicapping, not a substitute for it. The plays we actually stake are on the card above.
Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees
Card focus
MLB · Sat 1:06 PM ET · Yankees -1.5 · O/U 8 · ML Sox +108 / Yankees -122
New York's -122 moneyline is modest for a team also carrying -1.5 on the run line, which means the number is pricing an outright win more than a multi-run margin. Backing the Yankees on the line requires them to clear a bar the moneyline alone doesn't demand. Boston at +108 needs either the win or a one-run loss to cash the reverse side. At a total of 8, this sits in ordinary MLB territory, with no strong lean built into the number itself.
Los Angeles Dodgers at Detroit Tigers
Card focus
MLB · Sat 1:11 PM ET · Dodgers -1.5 · O/U 7 · ML Dodgers -180 / Tigers +153
A -180 moneyline paired with -1.5 on the run line shows the market comfortable with the Dodgers both winning and covering the extra run, unlike a coin-flip favorite carrying the same spread. Detroit at +153 is priced as a live underdog straight up, not just live to keep it close. The total at 7 is on the lower end for this matchup type, so the side and total questions here are largely independent of each other.
Chicago White Sox at Minnesota Twins
Card focus
MLB · Sat 2:11 PM ET · Twins -1.5 · O/U 9.5 · ML Sox +105 / Twins -120
Minnesota's -120 price next to -1.5 on the run line is a near-even split between win probability and margin, similar to a game where the favorite is respected but not heavily so. Chicago at +105 is essentially a pick to win outright. The total of 9.5 is the highest posted on this slate's early games, meaning the total carries more of the analytical weight here than the modest run-line number does.
Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals
Card focus
MLB · Sat 2:16 PM ET · Cardinals -1.5 · O/U 8.5 · ML Pirates +107 / Cardinals -126
St. Louis at -126 with -1.5 attached suggests the market leans toward the Cardinals covering the extra run more often than a flat coin-flip favorite would, but not by a wide margin. Pittsburgh's +107 makes the reverse side of the run line the more efficient way to play against that number if you like Pittsburgh at all. The 8.5 total sits mid-pack, without a clear signal toward over or under from the number alone.
North Carolina Tar Heels at TCU Horned Frogs
NCAAF · Sat 12:00 PM ET · Frogs -8.5 · O/U 46.5 · ML Heels +265 / Frogs -335
TCU -8.5 sits just below the double-digit range, meaning a backdoor field goal for North Carolina flips the cover without changing who won. That half point matters more than usual since 8.5 straddles common scoring increments. The -335 moneyline confirms the market views a TCU win as close to certain; the spread question is entirely about margin. At 46.5, the total gives room for either a competitive final score inside the number or a lopsided one that still stays under it.
Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs
MLB · Sat 2:21 PM ET · Cubs -1.5 · O/U 8.5 · ML Reds +164 / Cubs -195
Chicago's -195 moneyline against -1.5 on the run line signals the market expects the Cubs to both win and clear the extra run at a healthy clip. Cincinnati's +164 makes the moneyline underdog play cheaper relative to the run line than backing the Reds against the number. The total of 8.5 is moderate for this pairing, leaving the total as the less lopsided of the two markets on this card.
San Jose State Spartans at USC Trojans
NCAAF · Sat 3:00 PM ET · Trojans -38.5 · O/U 61.5 · ML Spartans +1825 / Trojans -50000
USC -38.5 with a moneyline near -50000 tells you the side market has essentially nothing left to price beyond margin. The only real question is whether the final gap lands above or below that number, which at this size can hinge on late-game decisions unrelated to who is winning. The 61.5 total is the more balanced number on the board here, since it doesn't require picking a side at all, only total scoring.
Seattle Mariners at Toronto Blue Jays
MLB · Sat 3:08 PM ET · Jays -1.5 · O/U 7.5 · ML Mariners +107 / Jays -125
Toronto's -125 moneyline next to -1.5 puts this game closer to a genuine margin bet than a pure win-probability play, since the price gap between the two markets is narrow. Seattle at +107 is priced almost as a true pick to win outright. The 7.5 total is on the lower end of this slate's range, which puts more emphasis on the total than the run-line number for anyone deciding where the value sits.
NC State Wolfpack at Virginia Cavaliers
NCAAF · Sat 3:30 PM ET · Cavaliers -4 · O/U 51.5 · ML Wolfpack +156 / Cavaliers -185
Virginia -4 is below the key number of 7, so the price is built around one-score outcomes rather than a two-touchdown buffer. The -185 moneyline confirms Virginia as a clear but not overwhelming favorite. NC State at +156 needs either the win or a field-goal-range loss to cover the reverse side. At 51.5, the total is on the higher side for this type of spread, meaning the total may carry more disagreement among books than the spread does.
Miami Marlins at Washington Nationals
MLB · Sat 4:06 PM ET · Marlins -1.5 · O/U 7.5 · ML Marlins -105 / Nationals -112
This is the rare MLB line where the moneyline underdog isn't the run-line underdog: Miami is favored by 1.5 on the spread yet sits at -105 on the moneyline while Washington is -112. That inversion means the market sees Washington as more likely to win the game outright than Miami is to cover the extra run. The 7.5 total is standard for this pairing, with no strong signal pulling toward over or under.
Colorado Rockies at Atlanta Braves
MLB · Sat 4:11 PM ET · Braves -1.5 · O/U 9 · ML Rockies +185 / Braves -215
Atlanta's -215 moneyline paired with -1.5 on the run line shows a favorite priced to win comfortably and often clear the extra run as well. Colorado's +185 reflects a longer path to cashing the reverse side than simply keeping the game close. At 9, the total sits toward the higher end for this slate, which is worth weighing against the lopsided side price when comparing where the real edge might be.
Kansas City Royals at Cleveland Guardians
MLB · Sat 4:11 PM ET · Guardians -1.5 · O/U 7.5 · ML Royals +130 / Guardians -152
Cleveland at -152 with -1.5 attached splits the difference between a moneyline-only favorite and a margin-driven one. Kansas City's +130 makes the reverse run line the cheaper way to play against the number if there's any lean toward the Royals. The total of 7.5 is on the lower side for this slate, meaning the total market may be the tighter, more efficiently priced of the two numbers here.
Houston Astros at New York Mets
MLB · Sat 4:11 PM ET · Mets -1.5 · O/U 8 · ML Astros +118 / Mets -139
New York's -139 moneyline against -1.5 on the run line suggests the Mets are favored to both win and cover the extra run more often than a coin-flip favorite carrying the same spread would be. Houston's +118 prices the reverse side as a moderate underdog play rather than a longshot. The 8 total is squarely average for this slate, offering no strong lean built into the number.
San Diego Padres at Tampa Bay Rays
MLB · Sat 4:11 PM ET · Rays -1.5 · O/U 7.5 · ML Padres +112 / Rays -130
Tampa Bay's -130 moneyline next to -1.5 keeps the gap between the two markets fairly tight, meaning the run line is asking for a real margin rather than just confirming an expected win. San Diego at +112 is priced close to a straight pick to win outright. At 7.5, the total sits on the lower end of this slate's range, which makes it the more contested number relative to the moderate side price.
Jacksonville State Gamecocks at North Dakota State Bison
NCAAF · Sat 5:30 PM ET · Bison -6.5 · O/U 46.5 · ML Gamecocks +215 / Bison -262
At -6.5, Bison is favoured by more than a field goal and less than a comfortable margin, which is the range where the total and the side inform each other most. Totals are where a close game gets interesting, and this one is posted at 46.5. Moneyline consensus is Gamecocks +215 / Bison -262. This one straddles 7, football's second-biggest margin cluster, so the half point is worth chasing across books. None of that is a recommendation — it is what the price implies. Check the current number before 5:30 PM ET and decide from there.
Sacramento State Hornets at Eastern Michigan Eagles
NCAAF · Sat 6:30 PM ET · Eagles -9 · O/U 53.5 · ML Hornets +275 / Eagles -350
At -9, Eagles is being priced to win by two scores, and a number that size shifts the interesting question from who wins to whether Hornets keeps it respectable. With the side this clear, 53.5 is the number worth arguing about — it is the market's estimate of the shape of the game rather than its winner. Moneyline consensus is Hornets +275 / Eagles -350. Whether that reads cheap or expensive is your call to make against your own book before 6:30 PM ET.
New Mexico State Aggies at Florida State Seminoles
NCAAF · Sat 7:00 PM ET · Seminoles -31.5 · O/U 53.5 · ML Aggies +3000 / Seminoles -10000
-31.5 on Seminoles is the market expecting this to be decided early, which makes the total the more informative of the two prices here. A total of 53.5 beside a spread this size is the market describing pace as much as strength; that is the half of the price still open to disagreement. Moneyline consensus is Aggies +3000 / Seminoles -10000. Compare this against your own book before 7:00 PM ET — the price you actually get is the only one that pays.
Hawaii Rainbow Warriors at Stanford Cardinal
NCAAF · Sat 7:00 PM ET · Cardinal -4 · O/U 48.5 · ML Warriors +160 / Cardinal -190
At -4, Cardinal is favoured by more than a field goal and less than a comfortable margin, which is the range where the total and the side inform each other most. The market has priced 48.5 points into this one, which is the number to start from if the side is too close to call. Moneyline consensus is Warriors +160 / Cardinal -190. Whatever you make of it, shop the number before 7:00 PM ET; a half point here is worth more than most opinions about the game.
Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees
MLB · Sat 7:16 PM ET · Yankees -1.5 · O/U 8 · ML Sox +110 / Yankees -130
The consensus has Yankees -1.5, a margin narrow enough that the difference between books matters more than the difference between the teams. Totals are where a close game gets interesting, and this one is posted at 8. Moneyline consensus is Sox +110 / Yankees -130. The board above is the median across US books at publication. Check it against your book before 7:16 PM ET rather than assuming they match.
Texas Rangers at Milwaukee Brewers
MLB · Sat 7:16 PM ET · Brewers -1.5 · O/U 8 · ML Rangers +141 / Brewers -164
-1.5 on Brewers is a lean, not a verdict: the market is telling you it expects Rangers to be within a score of this at the end. The total sits at 8, which is the faster read on this game than the side: it says how much scoring the market has priced in before you form your own view. Moneyline consensus is Rangers +141 / Brewers -164. Prices move up to 7:16 PM ET, so treat the number here as where the market was and not necessarily where you can get on.
Memphis Tigers at UNLV Rebels
NCAAF · Sat 10:00 PM ET · Rebels -4 · O/U 56.5 · ML Tigers +159 / Rebels -190
At -4, Rebels is favoured by more than a field goal and less than a comfortable margin, which is the range where the total and the side inform each other most. 56.5 is the posted total. Comparing it against what you think the game looks like is usually a cleaner decision than picking a side this close. Moneyline consensus is Tigers +159 / Rebels -190. None of that is a recommendation — it is what the price implies. Check the current number before 10:00 PM ET and decide from there.
Philadelphia Phillies at Los Angeles Angels
MLB · Sat 10:08 PM ET · Phillies -1.5 · O/U 8 · ML Phillies -235 / Angels +197
A -1.5 price on Phillies puts this inside a single score, and games priced this close are where a half point is worth the most of anywhere on the board. The market has priced 8 points into this one, which is the number to start from if the side is too close to call. Moneyline consensus is Phillies -235 / Angels +197. Whether that reads cheap or expensive is your call to make against your own book before 10:08 PM ET.
What Makes A Play A Best Bet
The phrase is used loosely everywhere, so here is the specific test a play has to pass to reach this page's card.
- A priced disagreement. Our number on the game differs from the market's by more than the vig we pay to get on. No disagreement, no play, however attractive the matchup.
- A reason that existed before the number. A schedule spot, a pace mismatch, a pitching edge, a key-number position. If the reasoning was constructed to justify a number we already liked, it is not a reason.
- A price still available. An edge that has already been bet away by the time you read it is not an edge. That is why the card ships early and why closing line value is the honest scorecard.
- A size that fits. A larger edge earns a second unit. It does not earn a bankroll. See unit sizing.
Parlays built for payout rather than price, "lock of the day" language, and the practice of publishing a best bet every single day regardless of what the board offers. Some days the honest answer is one play, and some days it is none.
How To Compare Prices Across Sports
The board above mixes leagues on purpose, because the question that matters on a mixed slate is not which game you like but which price is best. A -3.5 in the NFL, a -145 in baseball and a 224.5 total in the NBA are all the same kind of object once you convert them.
Convert everything to implied probability and the comparison becomes mechanical: a -145 favourite needs to win 59.2% of the time to break even, so if you think the true number is 63% you have a play, and if you think it is 58% you do not, no matter how confident the write-up sounds. Football spreads need the same treatment against key numbers before they are comparable at all.
The by-sport editions go deeper on each: NFL, NBA, MLB and college football.
What This Page Is Not
It is not a feed of guaranteed winners, and nobody honest sells one. Long-run handicapping at a professional level means winning somewhere in the mid-50s against the spread, which is enough to matter enormously and nothing like enough to be certain about any single game.
It is also not a substitute for your own process. The most valuable thing on this page for a new bettor is the guide list further down, not the card — are sports picks worth it makes that case honestly, including the parts that argue against paying for anything.
Money Maverick Sports publishes analysis and opinion, not predictions of certainty. No play on this page or behind the membership wall is guaranteed. Bet only what you can afford to lose, and if betting has stopped being a choice, call 1-800-GAMBLER.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are today's best bets?
The board above lists every game with a consensus number posted for today across the leagues in season, and the previews cover the games the card is built around. The graded plays themselves — with write-ups and recommended unit sizing — go to members, and every result is posted afterwards on the records page.
Is there a best bet every day?
No, and that is deliberate. A card is built from priced disagreements, and some slates do not contain one worth the vig. A service that publishes a best bet every day of the year is publishing on a schedule rather than on merit.
How do I compare a spread to a moneyline?
Convert both to implied probability, then compare each against your own estimate. The implied probability guide has the arithmetic, and it is the single most useful five minutes a new bettor can spend.
Can I see previous days' best bets?
Yes. Every edition of this page is kept permanently in the pick archive, with the numbers as they stood when it published rather than as they look after the fact.
