Best Bets Today — August 31, 2026
Updated August 31, 2026 · Money Maverick Sports
Monday's board is all baseball, and every game on the slate carries the same shape: a -1.5 run line attached to a moneyline favorite, with totals bunched between 7.5 and 11. The through-line for the day is the gap between a team's moneyline price and its run-line price — that gap is where the real number sits, since winning outright and winning by two are different propositions. Totals worth separating from the crowd sit at the extremes: Texas's 7.5 and Colorado's 11.

The Card On Aug 31
A best bet is not the game we like most. It is the game where the gap between our number and the market's is largest relative to what it costs to get on.
No graded plays were published on this page for August 31, 2026. Members receive the full card — every play, the write-up behind it and the recommended unit sizing — before the numbers move, and every result is posted publicly afterwards on the records page whether it won or lost.

Game-By-Game Previews
Each read below is drafted by our preview engine from the consensus numbers on this board and nothing else, then filtered before publication: it cannot cite an injury, a record or a statistic, because it is not given any, and language that promises a result is rejected outright. They are a starting point for your own handicapping, not a substitute for it. The plays we actually stake are on the card above.
Every number quoted in these reads is the one that was on the board on August 31, 2026. Nothing here has been revised with hindsight, and nothing here reflects the current market.
San Francisco Giants at Atlanta Braves
Card focus
MLB · Mon 6:05 PM ET · Braves -1.5 · O/U 8 · ML Giants +146 / Braves -162
Atlanta at -162 on the line but only -1.5 on the run line is the standard split: the market thinks the Braves win close more often than they win by two. A one-run Atlanta victory cashes the moneyline and misses the spread, so the true argument on the side is whether Atlanta's edge is large enough to clear that extra run, not whether they win. The total sits at 8, middling for this pairing, with no strong lean signaled by the number itself.
San Diego Padres at Cincinnati Reds
Card focus
MLB · Mon 6:41 PM ET · Padres -1.5 · O/U 9 · ML Padres -147 / Reds +130
San Diego's -147 price against a -1.5 run line shows a similar gap to Atlanta's, but tighter — the market gives the Padres a bit less moneyline cushion relative to the spread than some of the day's other favorites. That makes the run-line number the more defensible price relative to the moneyline juice. The total at 9 is the second-highest on the slate, leaving more room for the under to matter than in the 8-run games elsewhere on the board.
New York Mets at Tampa Bay Rays
Card focus
MLB · Mon 6:41 PM ET · Rays -1.5 · O/U 8 · ML Mets +150 / Rays -170
Tampa Bay -170 on the moneyline against a flat -1.5 spread is a wide gap, meaning the market leans heavily on the Rays winning outright but is far less confident they clear two runs. That's the entire question on this side: New York doesn't need to win, just needs to keep it inside two. Total at 8 is on the lower end of the day's spread, favoring pitching to hold rather than offense to break through.
Seattle Mariners at Boston Red Sox
Card focus
MLB · Mon 6:46 PM ET · Sox -1.5 · O/U 8 · ML Mariners +145 / Sox -163
Boston's -163 price paired with -1.5 leaves the same familiar split as most of the card: substantial confidence in the moneyline, muted confidence in clearing the extra run. Seattle at +145 is priced to win outright with reasonable frequency even in a game the Red Sox are favored to control. The total of 8 keeps this in line with the day's median, giving no particular lean toward over or under based on the number alone.
Miami Marlins at Washington Nationals
MLB · Mon 6:46 PM ET · Marlins -1.5 · O/U 8.5 · ML Marlins -118 / Nationals +104
Miami's moneyline at -118 is by far the tightest favorite price on the slate relative to its own -1.5 run line, which is a notable disconnect — the market barely favors Miami straight up while still installing a spread that demands a two-run margin. That combination makes the run line the more expensive ask relative to the moneyline than anywhere else today. The 8.5 total is mid-pack, with half a run tacked on compared to several games at a flat 8.
Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs
MLB · Mon 7:41 PM ET · Brewers -1.5 · O/U 9.5 · ML Brewers -104 / Cubs -112
Milwaukee is only a -104 favorite on the moneyline against Chicago's -112, essentially a coin-flip price, yet the spread still lists Milwaukee at -1.5. That's the widest gap on the board between what the moneyline says about who wins and what the run line demands. Bettors backing Milwaukee at -1.5 are laying a real number on a game the market views as pick'em. The 9.5 total is the second-highest of the day, again separating this from the 8-run crowd.
Detroit Tigers at Minnesota Twins
MLB · Mon 7:41 PM ET · Twins -1.5 · O/U 8.5 · ML Tigers +116 / Twins -134
Minnesota's -134 moneyline against a -1.5 line is closer to the middle of today's range — meaningful favorite status without an extreme price. Detroit at +116 needs only to avoid a multi-run margin or win outright to be live on either number. The total sits at 8.5, the same half-run total that recurs across several games tonight, putting this squarely in line with the slate's typical scoring expectation rather than at either extreme.
Athletics at Texas Rangers
MLB · Mon 8:06 PM ET · Rangers -1.5 · O/U 7.5 · ML Athletics +189 / Rangers -225
Texas at -225 is the most lopsided moneyline on the entire slate, and the -1.5 run line does little to close that gap — the market is confident both in a Rangers win and, relatively speaking, in a comfortable one. The Athletics at +189 are priced as the day's biggest outright underdog. What stands out more is the total: 7.5 is the lowest number on the board, the only total under 8, worth noting against the day's otherwise middling scoring lines.
Chicago White Sox at Houston Astros
MLB · Mon 8:11 PM ET · Astros -1.5 · O/U 8.5 · ML Sox +114 / Astros -130
Houston's -130 price against -1.5 is a moderate gap, favoring the Astros clearly without pricing in overwhelming dominance. Chicago at +114 is live on the moneyline in a way that's typical for the day's underdogs. The 8.5 total again matches several other games tonight, suggesting the market sees a broadly average scoring environment here rather than anything unusual on either side of the number.
Baltimore Orioles at Colorado Rockies
MLB · Mon 8:41 PM ET · Orioles -1.5 · O/U 11 · ML Orioles -139 / Rockies +119
Baltimore's -139 moneyline against its own -1.5 line is a standard-sized gap for this slate, but the total is the story: 11 is easily the highest number posted today, several runs above the 8-to-8.5 range that dominates the rest of the card. That gap alone makes the total the more interesting market here relative to a fairly ordinary run-line price on the side.
New York Yankees at Los Angeles Angels
MLB · Mon 9:38 PM ET · Yankees -1.5 · O/U 8.5 · ML Yankees -142 / Angels +120
New York's -142 price against -1.5 sits in the same middle band as several other favorites tonight — enough confidence to lay a healthy moneyline number without an extreme spread price. Los Angeles at +120 needs to either win outright or lose by exactly one to split the two markets. The 8.5 total lines up with the day's most common number, offering no particular signal toward over or under based on the posted line alone.
Philadelphia Phillies at Arizona Diamondbacks
MLB · Mon 9:41 PM ET · Phillies -1.5 · O/U 8.5 · ML Phillies -123 / Diamondbacks +106
Philadelphia's -123 moneyline against a -1.5 spread is one of the tighter gaps on the slate, meaning the market's confidence in a Phillies win and its confidence in a two-run Phillies win aren't far apart. Arizona at +106 is priced almost as a true underdog coin-flip. The 8.5 total keeps this game in the same range as most of the night's other matchups, without the total offering a sharper edge than the side does here.
What Makes A Play A Best Bet
The phrase is used loosely everywhere, so here is the specific test a play has to pass to reach this page's card.
- A priced disagreement. Our number on the game differs from the market's by more than the vig we pay to get on. No disagreement, no play, however attractive the matchup.
- A reason that existed before the number. A schedule spot, a pace mismatch, a pitching edge, a key-number position. If the reasoning was constructed to justify a number we already liked, it is not a reason.
- A price still available. An edge that has already been bet away by the time you read it is not an edge. That is why the card ships early and why closing line value is the honest scorecard.
- A size that fits. A larger edge earns a second unit. It does not earn a bankroll. See unit sizing.
Parlays built for payout rather than price, "lock of the day" language, and the practice of publishing a best bet every single day regardless of what the board offers. Some days the honest answer is one play, and some days it is none.
How To Compare Prices Across Sports
The board above mixes leagues on purpose, because the question that matters on a mixed slate is not which game you like but which price is best. A -3.5 in the NFL, a -145 in baseball and a 224.5 total in the NBA are all the same kind of object once you convert them.
Convert everything to implied probability and the comparison becomes mechanical: a -145 favourite needs to win 59.2% of the time to break even, so if you think the true number is 63% you have a play, and if you think it is 58% you do not, no matter how confident the write-up sounds. Football spreads need the same treatment against key numbers before they are comparable at all.
The by-sport editions go deeper on each: NFL, NBA, MLB and college football.
What This Page Is Not
It is not a feed of guaranteed winners, and nobody honest sells one. Long-run handicapping at a professional level means winning somewhere in the mid-50s against the spread, which is enough to matter enormously and nothing like enough to be certain about any single game.
It is also not a substitute for your own process. The most valuable thing on this page for a new bettor is the guide list further down, not the card — are sports picks worth it makes that case honestly, including the parts that argue against paying for anything.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are the odds on this page still available to bet?
No. Every spread, total and price here is the market snapshot captured on August 31, 2026, the day this edition published. The games have been played and the numbers are a historical record. For the current board see best bets today.
Why keep old editions online?
Because a service that deletes its old boards is asking to be taken on trust. Keeping each edition exactly as it published means the numbers we posted before the games can be checked against what happened after them, and the graded plays are totalled on the records page whether the month was good or bad.
Were the plays on this card graded?
Plays are graded once the games finish, and the result is shown on the card above — win, loss or push. A play still marked pending on an old edition is one that has not been settled yet; it is never removed. Past results do not predict future results.
