Best Bets Today: October 1, 2026
Every league in season on one board, previews of the games the card is built around, and the standard a play has to clear — refreshed every morning.
Updated October 1, 2026 · Money Maverick Sports
Thursday's board is thick with NHL puck lines, where -1.5 is the standard number and the real signal usually sits in the moneyline price attached to it. Two college football spreads sit near even with high totals, a Phillies-Braves run line prices unusually close to a coin flip, and Pittsburgh landing exactly on three against Cleveland makes that NFL number the clearest key-number situation on the slate.
Numbers below are the median across 11 US sportsbooks surveyed when this edition published, not one book's opinion. Lines move all day — confirm the current price at your own book before betting, and read line shopping for why the half point you give away is the most expensive habit in betting.
Today's Card
A best bet is not the game we like most. It is the game where the gap between our number and the market's is largest relative to what it costs to get on.
Today's graded plays have not been published on this page. Members receive the full card — every play, the write-up behind it and the recommended unit sizing — before the numbers move, and every result is posted publicly afterwards on the records page whether it won or lost.

Game-By-Game Previews
Each read below is drafted by our preview engine from the consensus numbers on this board and nothing else, then filtered before publication: it cannot cite an injury, a record or a statistic, because it is not given any, and language that promises a result is rejected outright. They are a starting point for your own handicapping, not a substitute for it. The plays we actually stake are on the card above.
Buffalo Sabres at Columbus Blue Jackets
Card focus
NHL · Thu 7:10 PM ET · Jackets -1.5 · O/U 6 · ML Sabres -110 / Jackets -110
Columbus sits at -1.5, the standard hockey puck line, but the moneyline is a flat -110/-110 coin flip. That gap matters: the market expects this decided by a single goal more often than not, so Columbus covering -1.5 requires a two-goal margin the even moneyline doesn't really project. Buffalo backers are effectively buying the field at even money while also getting 1.5 goals. The total at 6 sits in the middle of tonight's range, making the side the more textured number here.
Philadelphia Flyers at New Jersey Devils
Card focus
NHL · Thu 7:10 PM ET · Devils -1.5 · O/U 5.5 · ML Flyers +140 / Devils -165
New Jersey's -1.5 is priced through a -165 moneyline, with Philadelphia at +140. The gap between those numbers is smaller than it looks: the Devils need to win by two for the spread to cash, and -165 implies they win outright close to 62% of the time, not that they win by multiple goals. The 5.5 total is low for this market, a full goal under several other postings tonight, which makes it the number worth more attention than the puck line.
Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Rangers
Card focus
NHL · Thu 7:10 PM ET · Lightning -1.5 · O/U 6 · ML Lightning -143 / Rangers +120
Tampa Bay's -1.5 comes with a -143 moneyline against New York's +120, a gap that puts most of the implied value on Tampa simply winning rather than winning by two. At 6 the total sits at the higher end of tonight's NHL postings. Anyone backing New York is taking the many ways a one-goal, non-covering Rangers loss settles that side, which the moneyline prices more directly than the spread does.
North Texas Mean Green at Tulsa Golden Hurricane
Card focus
NCAAF · Thu 9:00 PM ET · Green -1 · O/U 57.5 · ML Green -115 / Hurricane -106
A 1-point line with moneylines of -115 and -106 says the market sees this as close to a coin flip, with the spread existing mainly to split juice rather than reflect a clear edge. At 57.5, the total carries far more information than the side does; it's the number built on expected pace and scoring environment, while the 1-point line leaves almost no cushion for the field-goal buffer bigger favorites usually get.
Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at New Mexico State Aggies
NCAAF · Thu 8:00 PM ET · Aggies -2.5 · O/U 57 · ML Hilltoppers +111 / Aggies -134
New Mexico State's -2.5 keeps the number off the key three, meaning a field goal either way settles the spread outright rather than pushing. Western Kentucky's +111 against -134 implies a modest but clear edge for the Aggies straight up. With the total at 57, nearly the same number as tonight's North Texas-Tulsa game, the scoring expectation is set high enough that the side may be the cleaner of the two markets to evaluate.
Minnesota Wild at Nashville Predators
NHL · Thu 8:10 PM ET · Wild -1.5 · O/U 6 · ML Wild -145 / Predators +120
Minnesota's -1.5 is backed by a -145 moneyline, with Nashville's +120 implying real respect for a straight-up upset. A two-goal Minnesota win is a smaller subset of their winning outcomes than the moneyline alone suggests, so bettors on the Wild's spread are paying for more than the moneyline would ask. The 6 total is standard for tonight's slate, leaving the side as the number actually shaped by this specific matchup.
Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves
MLB · Thu 8:11 PM ET · Phillies -1.5 · O/U 7.5 · ML Phillies -115 / Braves -102
Philadelphia's run line sits at -1.5 with a moneyline of only -115 against Atlanta's -102, a tight gap that tells you the market doesn't see much separation between the two teams straight up. That makes the run line a real margin-dependent bet: Philadelphia covering requires a gap the near-even moneyline doesn't strongly project. At 7.5, the total is mid-range for the matchup and arguably the more balanced of the two numbers on the board.
Pittsburgh Steelers at Cleveland Browns
NFL · Thu 8:15 PM ET · Steelers -3 · O/U 38.5 · ML Steelers -150 / Browns +125
Three is the number that matters most in the NFL, and Pittsburgh sitting exactly there means a field-goal margin pushes rather than deciding either side. The -150 moneyline implies the Steelers win outright more often than three points alone would suggest, which is the usual shape around this key number. At 38.5, the total is middling for a divisional matchup and offers less obvious texture than the spread itself does here.
Seattle Kraken at Calgary Flames
NHL · Thu 9:10 PM ET · Flames -1.5 · O/U 6 · ML Kraken -108 / Flames -110
Calgary's -1.5 carries a moneyline of just -110 against Seattle's -108, as close to even money as this market gets. That means the spread is pricing the puck line, not a real gap in team strength; both sides rate almost identically to win outright, so the -1.5 requires Calgary to separate by two in a game the market treats as a toss-up. The 6 total is standard, leaving the side as the more interesting number to shop today.
Chicago Blackhawks at Utah Mammoth
NHL · Thu 9:10 PM ET · Mammoth -1.5 · O/U 6 · ML Blackhawks +180 / Mammoth -215
Utah's -215 moneyline against Chicago's +180 reflects a clear gap in expected outright results, and the attached -1.5 asks for a two-goal margin on top of that edge. At 6, the total sits in the usual NHL band. Backing Chicago means betting against a sizable favorite straight up, while backing Utah at -1.5 compounds that favorite's price with the extra goal the puck line demands.
Edmonton Oilers at Vancouver Canucks
NHL · Thu 10:10 PM ET · Oilers -1.5 · O/U 6.5 · ML Oilers -209 / Canucks +175
Edmonton's -209 moneyline against Vancouver's +175 is a significant gap for an NHL game, and the -1.5 line stacks a two-goal requirement onto an already strong favorite. At 6.5, the total runs a half-goal above most of tonight's other postings, which given the size of the moneyline gap may be the number carrying more room for debate than the spread.
Florida Panthers at San Jose Sharks
NHL · Thu 10:10 PM ET · Panthers -1.5 · O/U 6.5 · ML Panthers -147 / Sharks +125
Florida's -147 moneyline against San Jose's +125 shows a moderate but clear gap in expected outright results, with the attached -1.5 adding the usual two-goal ask on top. The 6.5 total matches the higher end of tonight's board. San Jose backers are taking the many non-covering ways Florida wins by exactly one, a scenario the moneyline prices more directly than the spread does.
What Makes A Play A Best Bet
The phrase is used loosely everywhere, so here is the specific test a play has to pass to reach this page's card.
- A priced disagreement. Our number on the game differs from the market's by more than the vig we pay to get on. No disagreement, no play, however attractive the matchup.
- A reason that existed before the number. A schedule spot, a pace mismatch, a pitching edge, a key-number position. If the reasoning was constructed to justify a number we already liked, it is not a reason.
- A price still available. An edge that has already been bet away by the time you read it is not an edge. That is why the card ships early and why closing line value is the honest scorecard.
- A size that fits. A larger edge earns a second unit. It does not earn a bankroll. See unit sizing.
Parlays built for payout rather than price, "lock of the day" language, and the practice of publishing a best bet every single day regardless of what the board offers. Some days the honest answer is one play, and some days it is none.
How To Compare Prices Across Sports
The board above mixes leagues on purpose, because the question that matters on a mixed slate is not which game you like but which price is best. A -3.5 in the NFL, a -145 in baseball and a 224.5 total in the NBA are all the same kind of object once you convert them.
Convert everything to implied probability and the comparison becomes mechanical: a -145 favourite needs to win 59.2% of the time to break even, so if you think the true number is 63% you have a play, and if you think it is 58% you do not, no matter how confident the write-up sounds. Football spreads need the same treatment against key numbers before they are comparable at all.
The by-sport editions go deeper on each: NFL, NBA, MLB and college football.
What This Page Is Not
It is not a feed of guaranteed winners, and nobody honest sells one. Long-run handicapping at a professional level means winning somewhere in the mid-50s against the spread, which is enough to matter enormously and nothing like enough to be certain about any single game.
It is also not a substitute for your own process. The most valuable thing on this page for a new bettor is the guide list further down, not the card — are sports picks worth it makes that case honestly, including the parts that argue against paying for anything.
Money Maverick Sports publishes analysis and opinion, not predictions of certainty. No play on this page or behind the membership wall is guaranteed. Bet only what you can afford to lose, and if betting has stopped being a choice, call 1-800-GAMBLER.
Before You Bet: The Guides Behind This Card
Nothing on this page beats knowing the mechanics cold. These are the evergreen guides the analysis above assumes, and they do not change when the slate does.

| Expected value | The one calculation that defines a best bet. |
| Closing line value | How to judge a play before it settles. |

Every edition of this page is kept permanently. The numbers stay exactly as they were posted on the morning of the slate, which makes the archive the only honest way to check what a market looked like before the games were played rather than after.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are today's best bets?
The board above lists every game with a consensus number posted for today across the leagues in season, and the previews cover the games the card is built around. The graded plays themselves — with write-ups and recommended unit sizing — go to members, and every result is posted afterwards on the records page.
Is there a best bet every day?
No, and that is deliberate. A card is built from priced disagreements, and some slates do not contain one worth the vig. A service that publishes a best bet every day of the year is publishing on a schedule rather than on merit.
How do I compare a spread to a moneyline?
Convert both to implied probability, then compare each against your own estimate. The implied probability guide has the arithmetic, and it is the single most useful five minutes a new bettor can spend.
Can I see previous days' best bets?
Yes. Every edition of this page is kept permanently in the pick archive, with the numbers as they stood when it published rather than as they look after the fact.
