Best Bets Today — October 4, 2026
Updated October 4, 2026 · Money Maverick Sports
Sunday's board runs the full spectrum from a true pick'em NHL tilt to an 11.5-point NFL spread. Several NFL numbers sit right on or straddling the 3-point key margin, which matters more for half-point value than the moneylines around them suggest. Baseball brings two standard -1.5 run lines with modest juice. Across the slate, the totals often carry more signal than the sides, particularly where spreads cluster near key numbers.

The Card On Oct 4
A best bet is not the game we like most. It is the game where the gap between our number and the market's is largest relative to what it costs to get on.

Game-By-Game Previews
Each read below is drafted by our preview engine from the consensus numbers on this board and nothing else, then filtered before publication: it cannot cite an injury, a record or a statistic, because it is not given any, and language that promises a result is rejected outright. They are a starting point for your own handicapping, not a substitute for it. The plays we actually stake are on the card above.
Every number quoted in these reads is the one that was on the board on October 4, 2026. Nothing here has been revised with hindsight, and nothing here reflects the current market.
Winnipeg Jets at Detroit Red Wings
Card focus
NHL · Sun 1:10 PM ET · Pick'em · O/U 5.5 · ML Jets -110 / Wings -110
Detroit is priced at pick'em and both moneylines sit at -110, so the market is charging the same vig regardless of side, meaning neither team is given an edge beyond home ice. For either side to be right here, it comes down to finishing chances rather than anything the number tells you. The total of 5.5 is the sharper conversation, a standard NHL number where the half-goal cushion decides over/under far more often than the pick spread decides the winner.
San Diego Padres at Milwaukee Brewers
Card focus
MLB · Sun 4:00 PM ET · Brewers -1.5 · O/U 7 · ML Padres +120 / Brewers -143
Milwaukee at -1.5 needs to win by two or more for the run line to cash, while San Diego covers with either an outright win or a one-run loss, which the +120 price reflects. The gap between -143 on the moneyline and -1.5 on the run line tells you the market expects a competitive margin, not a blowout. At total 7, the over/under is close to a coin flip number in current run environments, making it the side worth more attention than the spread.
Utah Mammoth at New York Rangers
Card focus
NHL · Sun 6:10 PM ET · Rangers -1.5 · O/U 5.5 · ML Mammoth +110 / Rangers -130
New York's -1.5 puck line asks for a two-goal margin, a bigger ask than the -130 moneyline alone implies, since that price is just for the outright win. Utah at +110 covers with a win or a one-goal loss, giving the underdog side real value if the game stays tight. Total 5.5 is the standard NHL number and, given the spread already prices in a competitive game, the over/under here carries as much weight as which team wins.
Atlanta Braves at Los Angeles Dodgers
Card focus
MLB · Sun 8:00 PM ET · Dodgers -1.5 · O/U 7 · ML Braves +130 / Dodgers -150
Dodgers is only -1.5 against Braves, which is the market saying it expects a one-score game and leaning barely at all. 7 is the posted total. Comparing it against what you think the game looks like is usually a cleaner decision than picking a side this close. Moneyline consensus is Braves +130 / Dodgers -150. Compare this against your own book before 8:00 PM ET — the price you actually get is the only one that pays.
Indianapolis Colts at Washington Commanders
NFL · Sun 9:30 AM ET · Colts -4.5 · O/U 46.5 · ML Colts -220 / Commanders +180
Indianapolis at -4.5 sits just past the key number of 3, so Washington backers are getting a bit more cushion than a field-goal game would offer. For the Commanders to be right at 4.5, they need one defensive stop or one extra possession beyond what a straight field-goal underdog would require. The -220 moneyline reflects a clear favorite without the price of a double-digit line. Total 46.5 is middling for this window, making the side the more textured number here.
Arizona Cardinals at New York Giants
NFL · Sun 1:00 PM ET · Cardinals -2.5 · O/U 44.5 · ML Cardinals -139 / Giants +116
Arizona's -2.5 sits just under the 3-point key number, so New York is getting a half-point of value that would disappear if this were a standard field-goal line. For the Giants to cover, they simply need to avoid a field-goal loss; for Arizona, winning outright becomes the cleaner path given the moneyline gap of -139 to +116. Total 44.5 is unremarkable for this matchup, leaving the half-point on the spread as the more relevant piece of this number.
Tennessee Titans at Baltimore Ravens
NFL · Sun 1:00 PM ET · Ravens -11.5 · O/U 42.5 · ML Titans +520 / Ravens -725
At -11.5, Baltimore's spread is well clear of both key numbers of 3 and 7, so half-point value isn't really in play; this is a line built on magnitude, not margin precision. The -725 moneyline confirms the market views the outright outcome as close to settled, with Tennessee's +520 price reflecting long odds on the upset rather than the cover. Total 42.5 is on the lower side for this group, worth more scrutiny than the spread given how lopsided the line already is.
New England Patriots at Buffalo Bills
NFL · Sun 1:00 PM ET · Bills -7 · O/U 50 · ML Patriots +260 / Bills -325
Buffalo's -7 sits directly on the most significant key number in football, so there's no half-point cushion on either side of this spread, a push is live at exactly a touchdown margin. New England at +260 reflects a team priced to lose outright more often than not. Total 50 is the highest number on the board today, and with the spread landing on a push number, the over/under here arguably carries more decision weight than the side itself.
New York Jets at Chicago Bears
NFL · Sun 1:00 PM ET · Bears -3.5 · O/U 43 · ML Jets +160 / Bears -193
Chicago's -3.5 sits just beyond the 3-point key number, so New York is buying a half-point of insurance against the single most common NFL margin. That half-point is the entire story of this line; at exactly -3 it would be a different number. The -193 moneyline versus +160 on the Jets shows a moderate but not extreme favorite. Total 43 is average for this slate, making the spread's position relative to the key number the sharper detail here.
Jacksonville Jaguars at Cincinnati Bengals
NFL · Sun 1:00 PM ET · Bengals -2.5 · O/U 51.5 · ML Jaguars +120 / Bengals -142
Cincinnati's -2.5 again sits under the 3-point key number, giving Jacksonville a half-point of value that a flat -3 line wouldn't offer. For the Bengals to be the right side, they need more than a field goal worth of separation. Total 51.5 is the highest number among this group of NFL games, well above the 42-46 range elsewhere on the board, which makes the over/under the more interesting price relative to the moderate -142 favorite price on the spread.
Dallas Cowboys at Houston Texans
NFL · Sun 1:00 PM ET · Texans -3 · O/U 48.5 · ML Cowboys +131 / Texans -154
Houston's -3 sits exactly on the most contested key number in football, meaning this line carries real push risk and no half-point cushion either way. Dallas at +131 is priced for an outright upset more than a backdoor cover, since the number itself offers no half-point to lean on. Total 48.5 is on the higher end of today's NFL totals, and with the spread parked on a push number, that total deserves at least as much attention as the side.
Green Bay Packers at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
NFL · Sun 1:00 PM ET · Packers -3 · O/U 39 · ML Packers -170 / Buccaneers +142
Green Bay's -3 is another line sitting directly on the key number, so there's no half-point buffer for either side and a push at exactly three points is live. The -170 moneyline shows a moderate favorite price that doesn't fully reflect the added risk of landing on a push number. Total 39 is notably low for this slate, the lowest among the NFL games listed, making the total the sharper number to dig into relative to a spread parked on 3.
Los Angeles Rams at Philadelphia Eagles
NFL · Sun 1:00 PM ET · Rams -3.5 · O/U 42.5 · ML Rams -190 / Eagles +163
Los Angeles at -3.5 clears the 3-point key number by a half point, so Philadelphia is getting insurance against the single most common NFL final margin. That half-point is the functional difference between this line and a push-risk number. The -190 moneyline reflects a solid but not overwhelming favorite. Total 42.5 is middling for the day's board, and given the spread already prices around the key-number edge, the total here is the more open question.
Miami Dolphins at Minnesota Vikings
NFL · Sun 4:05 PM ET · Vikings -10 · O/U 38.5 · ML Dolphins +430 / Vikings -590
Minnesota's -10 is well clear of both the 3 and 7 key numbers, so this line is about scale rather than half-point precision. The -590 moneyline confirms the market sees the outright result as close to settled, while Miami's +430 price reflects long odds on the straight win. Total 38.5 is the lowest number on today's full board, which, paired with a double-digit favorite, makes the total the more meaningfully contested price of the two.
Denver Broncos at San Francisco 49ers
NFL · Sun 4:25 PM ET · 49ers -2.5 · O/U 48.5 · ML Broncos +125 / 49ers -146
49ers is only -2.5 against Broncos, which is the market saying it expects a one-score game and leaning barely at all. 48.5 is the posted total. Comparing it against what you think the game looks like is usually a cleaner decision than picking a side this close. Moneyline consensus is Broncos +125 / 49ers -146. The number sits beside 3, the most common football margin, which makes shopping for the better side of that half point the whole decision. The board above is the median across US books at publication. Check it against your book before 4:25 PM ET rather than assuming they match.
Kansas City Chiefs at Las Vegas Raiders
NFL · Sun 4:25 PM ET · Chiefs -4.5 · O/U 48 · ML Chiefs -225 / Raiders +188
The number on Chiefs is -4.5, which prices a clear advantage rather than a mismatch, and leaves the underdog live in the fourth quarter. The market has priced 48 points into this one, which is the number to start from if the side is too close to call. Moneyline consensus is Chiefs -225 / Raiders +188. Prices move up to 4:25 PM ET, so treat the number here as where the market was and not necessarily where you can get on.
Los Angeles Chargers at Seattle Seahawks
NFL · Sun 4:25 PM ET · Seahawks -7 · O/U 42.5 · ML Chargers +275 / Seahawks -350
At -7, Seahawks is favoured by more than a field goal and less than a comfortable margin, which is the range where the total and the side inform each other most. Totals are where a close game gets interesting, and this one is posted at 42.5. Moneyline consensus is Chargers +275 / Seahawks -350. Seven is the second-largest cluster in football margins, so a half point either side of this number is worth real win probability. None of that is a recommendation — it is what the price implies. Check the current number before 4:25 PM ET and decide from there.
Florida Panthers at Anaheim Ducks
NHL · Sun 8:10 PM ET · Panthers -1.5 · O/U 6.5 · ML Panthers -134 / Ducks +114
A -1.5 price on Panthers puts this inside a single score, and games priced this close are where a half point is worth the most of anywhere on the board. The market has priced 6.5 points into this one, which is the number to start from if the side is too close to call. Moneyline consensus is Panthers -134 / Ducks +114. Whatever you make of it, shop the number before 8:10 PM ET; a half point here is worth more than most opinions about the game.
Calgary Flames at Seattle Kraken
NHL · Sun 8:10 PM ET · Kraken -1.5 · O/U 5.5 · ML Flames +130 / Kraken -154
The consensus has Kraken -1.5, a margin narrow enough that the difference between books matters more than the difference between the teams. Totals are where a close game gets interesting, and this one is posted at 5.5. Moneyline consensus is Flames +130 / Kraken -154. The board above is the median across US books at publication. Check it against your book before 8:10 PM ET rather than assuming they match.
Detroit Lions at Carolina Panthers
NFL · Sun 8:20 PM ET · Lions -3.5 · O/U 51 · ML Lions -200 / Panthers +165
The number on Lions is -3.5, which prices a clear advantage rather than a mismatch, and leaves the underdog live in the fourth quarter. The total sits at 51, which is the faster read on this game than the side: it says how much scoring the market has priced in before you form your own view. Moneyline consensus is Lions -200 / Panthers +165. The number sits beside 3, the most common football margin, which makes shopping for the better side of that half point the whole decision. Prices move up to 8:20 PM ET, so treat the number here as where the market was and not necessarily where you can get on.
Vegas Golden Knights at Vancouver Canucks
NHL · Sun 9:10 PM ET · Knights -1.5 · O/U 6.5 · ML Knights -245 / Canucks +200
Knights is only -1.5 against Canucks, which is the market saying it expects a one-score game and leaning barely at all. 6.5 is the posted total. Comparing it against what you think the game looks like is usually a cleaner decision than picking a side this close. Moneyline consensus is Knights -245 / Canucks +200. None of that is a recommendation — it is what the price implies. Check the current number before 9:10 PM ET and decide from there.
What Makes A Play A Best Bet
The phrase is used loosely everywhere, so here is the specific test a play has to pass to reach this page's card.
- A priced disagreement. Our number on the game differs from the market's by more than the vig we pay to get on. No disagreement, no play, however attractive the matchup.
- A reason that existed before the number. A schedule spot, a pace mismatch, a pitching edge, a key-number position. If the reasoning was constructed to justify a number we already liked, it is not a reason.
- A price still available. An edge that has already been bet away by the time you read it is not an edge. That is why the card ships early and why closing line value is the honest scorecard.
- A size that fits. A larger edge earns a second unit. It does not earn a bankroll. See unit sizing.
Parlays built for payout rather than price, "lock of the day" language, and the practice of publishing a best bet every single day regardless of what the board offers. Some days the honest answer is one play, and some days it is none.
How To Compare Prices Across Sports
The board above mixes leagues on purpose, because the question that matters on a mixed slate is not which game you like but which price is best. A -3.5 in the NFL, a -145 in baseball and a 224.5 total in the NBA are all the same kind of object once you convert them.
Convert everything to implied probability and the comparison becomes mechanical: a -145 favourite needs to win 59.2% of the time to break even, so if you think the true number is 63% you have a play, and if you think it is 58% you do not, no matter how confident the write-up sounds. Football spreads need the same treatment against key numbers before they are comparable at all.
The by-sport editions go deeper on each: NFL, NBA, MLB and college football.
What This Page Is Not
It is not a feed of guaranteed winners, and nobody honest sells one. Long-run handicapping at a professional level means winning somewhere in the mid-50s against the spread, which is enough to matter enormously and nothing like enough to be certain about any single game.
It is also not a substitute for your own process. The most valuable thing on this page for a new bettor is the guide list further down, not the card — are sports picks worth it makes that case honestly, including the parts that argue against paying for anything.
Money Maverick Sports publishes analysis and opinion, not predictions of certainty. No play on this page or behind the membership wall is guaranteed. Bet only what you can afford to lose, and if betting has stopped being a choice, call 1-800-GAMBLER.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are the odds on this page still available to bet?
No. Every spread, total and price here is the market snapshot captured on October 4, 2026, the day this edition published. The games have been played and the numbers are a historical record. For the current board see best bets today.
Why keep old editions online?
Because a service that deletes its old boards is asking to be taken on trust. Keeping each edition exactly as it published means the numbers we posted before the games can be checked against what happened after them, and the graded plays are totalled on the records page whether the month was good or bad.
Were the plays on this card graded?
Plays are graded once the games finish, and the result is shown on the card above — win, loss or push. A play still marked pending on an old edition is one that has not been settled yet; it is never removed. Past results do not predict future results.
