Best Bets Today — July 29, 2026

Updated July 29, 2026 · Money Maverick Sports

Every MLB game on the board today carries the standard -1.5 run line, which means each favorite needs to win by two or more runs to cover while the underdog covers on any loss of exactly one run or an outright win. That gap between the moneyline price and the flat run-line number is the whole story on the side markets. Totals range from 5.5 up to 10.5, and with baseball's lack of a push number on half-runs, the total is often the sharper look than the line.

Archived edition — market snapshot from Wednesday, July 29, 2026. Every spread, total and price on this page is the number that was on the board when this edition published on that date. It is a historical record: the games have been played, the prices are not current, and nothing here is available to bet. For the live slate see best bets today.

The Card On Jul 29

A best bet is not the game we like most. It is the game where the gap between our number and the market's is largest relative to what it costs to get on.

Game-By-Game Previews

How these previews are written

Each read below is drafted by our preview engine from the consensus numbers on this board and nothing else, then filtered before publication: it cannot cite an injury, a record or a statistic, because it is not given any, and language that promises a result is rejected outright. They are a starting point for your own handicapping, not a substitute for it. The plays we actually stake are on the card above.

Every number quoted in these reads is the one that was on the board on July 29, 2026. Nothing here has been revised with hindsight, and nothing here reflects the current market.

Milwaukee Brewers at San Francisco Giants

Card focus

MLB · Wed 3:46 PM ET · Giants -1.5 · O/U 8.5 · ML Brewers +210 / Giants -286

Giants -286 on the moneyline but only -1.5 on the run line is a wide gap, and it means Milwaukee only needs to lose by one run, or win outright, to cash at +210. San Francisco has to clear a two-run margin, which heavy favorites do less often than their moneyline price suggests. The 8.5 total sits in the middle of the MLB range, giving neither over nor under an obvious structural edge here without more to go on.

Colorado Rockies at San Diego Padres

Card focus

MLB · Wed 4:11 PM ET · Padres -1.5 · O/U 5.5 · ML Rockies +213 / Padres -289

San Diego at -289 on the moneyline against a -1.5 spread again asks the favorite to win by multiple runs rather than simply win. Colorado at +213 covers on any single-run loss. The total here is the standout number on this slate at 5.5, one of the lowest posted today, which puts real weight on the under side of the ledger and makes the total arguably the more interesting number in this game than the side.

Texas Rangers at Tampa Bay Rays

Card focus

MLB · Wed 6:41 PM ET · Rays -1.5 · O/U 7.5 · ML Rangers +125 / Rays -144

This is the tightest moneyline gap on the board, Rays -144 against Rangers +125, yet the spread is still the standard -1.5. A short-priced favorite laying a run and a half is a meaningfully tougher ask than the moneyline alone implies, since Tampa Bay needs a clean two-run win rather than a coin-flip outcome. The 7.5 total is a common MLB number, and with a close moneyline the side market may carry more value than the total tonight.

Atlanta Braves at New York Mets

Card focus

MLB · Wed 7:11 PM ET · Braves -1.5 · O/U 7.5 · ML Braves -166 / Mets +141

Atlanta at -166 laying -1.5 needs a multi-run margin to cover, while New York at +141 only needs to avoid a two-run defeat. That's a real difference from simply picking the moneyline winner. The 7.5 total is standard for the league, and with a moderate rather than extreme favorite here, the run line carries more theoretical volatility than in the slate's biggest mismatches, making the side worth a closer look relative to the total.

Cleveland Guardians at Cincinnati Reds

MLB · Wed 7:11 PM ET · Guardians -1.5 · O/U 8.5 · ML Guardians -135 / Reds +116

Cleveland's -135 moneyline against a -1.5 spread is a modest gap, meaning the run line isn't asking much more of the favorite than the moneyline already implies. Cincinnati at +116 needs to keep this within a run or win it outright. The total sits at 8.5, on the higher side for this slate, which puts more emphasis on the over clearing that number than on either side of the run line itself.

New York Yankees at Chicago White Sox

MLB · Wed 7:41 PM ET · Yankees -1.5 · O/U 7.5 · ML Yankees -145 / Sox +124

New York's -145 price against Chicago's +124 is a fairly ordinary favorite-underdog split, but the flat -1.5 spread still requires a two-run margin rather than a simple win. That's the entire question on the side here. The 7.5 total is one of the more common MLB numbers, sitting right in the middle of today's range, which makes it a less distinctive number than the side price in this particular matchup.

Kansas City Royals at Minnesota Twins

MLB · Wed 7:41 PM ET · Twins -1.5 · O/U 9 · ML Royals +170 / Twins -205

Minnesota at -205 laying -1.5 is a significant favorite being asked to win by multiple runs, while Kansas City at +170 covers on anything short of a two-run loss. That combination, big favorite plus flat run line, is where the side price and the actual covering math diverge most. The total of 9 is on the higher end for this slate, worth weighing against the over-heavy shape that often accompanies lopsided moneylines like this one.

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals

MLB · Wed 7:46 PM ET · Cubs -1.5 · O/U 8 · ML Cubs -105 / Cardinals -109

Cubs -105 and Cardinals -109 is close to a pick'em on the moneyline, yet the spread still sits at the standard -1.5 for Chicago. A near-even moneyline paired with a two-run cover requirement makes this one of the more balanced side markets on the board today. The total at 8 is a common MLB number, and with the moneyline this tight, the side and total both look like fair coin markets rather than lopsided ones.

Houston Astros at Los Angeles Angels

MLB · Wed 9:39 PM ET · Astros -1.5 · O/U 9.5 · ML Astros -130 / Angels +112

Houston at -130 against a -1.5 line is a moderate favorite being asked for a multi-run win, with the Angels at +112 covering on a one-run loss or better. The gap between price and spread here is smaller than in some of today's bigger mismatches. The total of 9.5 is toward the higher end of the slate, which is the more notable number in this matchup relative to the fairly ordinary side price.

Boston Red Sox at Athletics

MLB · Wed 9:41 PM ET · Sox -1.5 · O/U 10.5 · ML Sox -150 / Athletics +130

Boston's -150 price against the flat -1.5 spread requires a two-run margin from the Red Sox, while the Athletics at +130 cover on anything closer than that. The total stands at 10.5, the highest posted on the entire slate today, which makes the over/under the number worth focusing on here rather than the side, given how far it sits above the more typical 7.5 to 8.5 range seen elsewhere tonight.

Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Dodgers

MLB · Wed 10:11 PM ET · Dodgers -1.5 · O/U 9.5 · ML Mariners +150 / Dodgers -178

Los Angeles at -178 laying -1.5 needs a clean multi-run win, and Seattle at +150 covers on a one-run loss or an outright upset. That's a wider favorite-to-spread gap than several other games on the board. The total sits at 9.5, matching the high end of tonight's range, and paired with a sizable moneyline favorite, the total may be the number that draws more attention than the side in this one.

What Makes A Play A Best Bet

The phrase is used loosely everywhere, so here is the specific test a play has to pass to reach this page's card.

  1. A priced disagreement. Our number on the game differs from the market's by more than the vig we pay to get on. No disagreement, no play, however attractive the matchup.
  2. A reason that existed before the number. A schedule spot, a pace mismatch, a pitching edge, a key-number position. If the reasoning was constructed to justify a number we already liked, it is not a reason.
  3. A price still available. An edge that has already been bet away by the time you read it is not an edge. That is why the card ships early and why closing line value is the honest scorecard.
  4. A size that fits. A larger edge earns a second unit. It does not earn a bankroll. See unit sizing.
What this rules out

Parlays built for payout rather than price, "lock of the day" language, and the practice of publishing a best bet every single day regardless of what the board offers. Some days the honest answer is one play, and some days it is none.

How To Compare Prices Across Sports

The board above mixes leagues on purpose, because the question that matters on a mixed slate is not which game you like but which price is best. A -3.5 in the NFL, a -145 in baseball and a 224.5 total in the NBA are all the same kind of object once you convert them.

Convert everything to implied probability and the comparison becomes mechanical: a -145 favourite needs to win 59.2% of the time to break even, so if you think the true number is 63% you have a play, and if you think it is 58% you do not, no matter how confident the write-up sounds. Football spreads need the same treatment against key numbers before they are comparable at all.

The by-sport editions go deeper on each: NFL, NBA, MLB and college football.

What This Page Is Not

It is not a feed of guaranteed winners, and nobody honest sells one. Long-run handicapping at a professional level means winning somewhere in the mid-50s against the spread, which is enough to matter enormously and nothing like enough to be certain about any single game.

It is also not a substitute for your own process. The most valuable thing on this page for a new bettor is the guide list further down, not the card — are sports picks worth it makes that case honestly, including the parts that argue against paying for anything.

Money Maverick Sports publishes analysis and opinion, not predictions of certainty. No play on this page or behind the membership wall is guaranteed. Bet only what you can afford to lose, and if betting has stopped being a choice, call 1-800-GAMBLER.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the odds on this page still available to bet?

No. Every spread, total and price here is the market snapshot captured on July 29, 2026, the day this edition published. The games have been played and the numbers are a historical record. For the current board see best bets today.

Why keep old editions online?

Because a service that deletes its old boards is asking to be taken on trust. Keeping each edition exactly as it published means the numbers we posted before the games can be checked against what happened after them, and the graded plays are totalled on the records page whether the month was good or bad.

Were the plays on this card graded?

Plays are graded once the games finish, and the result is shown on the card above — win, loss or push. A play still marked pending on an old edition is one that has not been settled yet; it is never removed. Past results do not predict future results.
