Best Bets Today — August 2, 2026
Updated August 2, 2026 · Money Maverick Sports
A full 13-game MLB Sunday, every line built on the standard -1.5 run line rather than a true point spread, so the number itself says little — the moneyline gap is where the real price sits. Those gaps range from a near pick'em in Detroit-Athletics to -230 in Milwaukee-Anaheim. Totals swing from 6.5 to 11.5, giving bettors a wide runs-scored spread to shop against the sides.
Archived edition — market snapshot from Sunday, August 2, 2026. Every spread, total and price on this page is the number that was on the board when this edition published on that date. It is a historical record: the games have been played, the prices are not current, and nothing here is available to bet. For the live slate see best bets today.
The Card On Aug 2
A best bet is not the game we like most. It is the game where the gap between our number and the market's is largest relative to what it costs to get on.
No graded plays were published on this page for August 2, 2026. Members receive the full card — every play, the write-up behind it and the recommended unit sizing — before the numbers move, and every result is posted publicly afterwards on the records page whether it won or lost.

Game-By-Game Previews
Each read below is drafted by our preview engine from the consensus numbers on this board and nothing else, then filtered before publication: it cannot cite an injury, a record or a statistic, because it is not given any, and language that promises a result is rejected outright. They are a starting point for your own handicapping, not a substitute for it. The plays we actually stake are on the card above.
Every number quoted in these reads is the one that was on the board on August 2, 2026. Nothing here has been revised with hindsight, and nothing here reflects the current market.
Washington Nationals at Atlanta Braves
Card focus
MLB · Sun 1:36 PM ET · Braves -1.5 · O/U 9 · ML Nationals +105 / Braves -122
Atlanta sits at -1.5 on the run line but only -122 on the moneyline, a gap of just 17 cents that tells you the book expects a close game more than a blowout. For the Braves to be the right side of -1.5 they need to win by two, not just win. Washington at +105 only needs to keep it within a run or steal it outright. The total of 9 is middle-of-the-road for this slate, offering no strong lean either way at these prices.
Philadelphia Phillies at Baltimore Orioles
Card focus
MLB · Sun 1:36 PM ET · Phillies -1.5 · O/U 8 · ML Phillies -141 / Orioles +120
Philadelphia's -1.5 run line carries a -141 moneyline against Baltimore's +120, a spread of 261 cents that marks this as one of the wider favorite prices on the board. Laying -1.5 here requires a genuine two-run margin, which is a real ask against a plus-money dog. The 8 total is on the lower end of the slate, and with the favorite priced this heavily on the line, the total may be the cleaner number to evaluate than the run line itself.
St. Louis Cardinals at Toronto Blue Jays
Card focus
MLB · Sun 1:38 PM ET · Jays -1.5 · O/U 9 · ML Cardinals +114 / Jays -130
Toronto's -1.5 comes with a -130 moneyline, St. Louis sits at +114, a 244-cent gap that puts the Blue Jays in solid-favorite territory without being extreme. Covering -1.5 means Toronto needs more than a one-run win, which single-run games make difficult even for the better side. The total of 9 is on the higher side of the slate's range, so the total-9 number is worth more scrutiny here than whether Toronto can clear the two-run cushion.
Arizona Diamondbacks at Cleveland Guardians
Card focus
MLB · Sun 1:41 PM ET · Guardians -1.5 · O/U 8 · ML Diamondbacks +148 / Guardians -173
Cleveland's -173 moneyline against Arizona's +148 is one of the wider gaps on the card, 321 cents, and the -1.5 run line asks Cleveland to back that price up with an actual two-run margin. That's a bigger lift than the moneyline alone suggests. The total sits at 8, tied for one of the lower numbers on the slate. With the favorite already priced heavily to win outright, the run-line side offers less value than shopping the total here.
Chicago White Sox at Tampa Bay Rays
MLB · Sun 1:41 PM ET · Rays -1.5 · O/U 7.5 · ML Sox +125 / Rays -147
Tampa Bay's -1.5 is backed by a -147 moneyline versus Chicago's +125, a 272-cent spread. Laying the run line means the Rays need to clear a two-run margin, not just win, which is a tougher ask than the moneyline price implies. The 7.5 total is among the lowest on the slate, suggesting the market expects a tighter, lower-scoring game overall — which cuts against the idea that the favorite comfortably clears -1.5 rather than winning by one.
Pittsburgh Pirates at Cincinnati Reds
MLB · Sun 1:41 PM ET · Reds -1.5 · O/U 8.5 · ML Pirates +118 / Reds -138
Cincinnati's -138 moneyline against Pittsburgh's +118 is a 256-cent gap, a moderate favorite by this slate's standards. The -1.5 run line requires the Reds to win by two, and with the total set at 8.5 — right in the middle of the board — there's no strong signal toward a high-scoring blowout that would make covering easier. The moneyline price and the run-line ask are close enough here that the two markets deserve separate consideration rather than treating them as one bet.
Miami Marlins at New York Mets
MLB · Sun 1:41 PM ET · Marlins -1.5 · O/U 8.5 · ML Marlins -120 / Mets +100
Miami is favored on the road at -1.5 and -120 on the moneyline, with the Mets at plus money at home, a 220-cent gap. A road favorite laying -1.5 needs a clean two-run win, and the moneyline gap here is one of the tighter ones on the slate, meaning the market isn't fully convinced of a blowout. The 8.5 total sits mid-pack. The size of that Miami favorite price relative to a plus-money home dog is the more interesting number to weigh.
Texas Rangers at Houston Astros
MLB · Sun 2:11 PM ET · Astros -1.5 · O/U 8.5 · ML Rangers +116 / Astros -136
Houston's -1.5 run line pairs with a -136 moneyline against Texas at +116, a 252-cent gap that's fairly standard for a moderate favorite. Clearing -1.5 means Houston needs more than a single run of separation, which single-run finishes make a real obstacle even for a true favorite. The total of 8.5 sits in the middle of the slate's range, giving no strong lean toward the kind of scoring environment that would make a two-run margin more or less likely.
New York Yankees at Chicago Cubs
MLB · Sun 2:21 PM ET · Yankees -1.5 · O/U 6.5 · ML Yankees -119 / Cubs +101
New York's -1.5 is priced at only -119 against the Cubs' +101, a 220-cent gap that's among the tightest favorite lines on the slate. That near-even moneyline against a -1.5 requirement means the Yankees need to win by two in a game the market views as close to a coin flip. The total of 6.5 is the lowest number on the board, which argues for a low-scoring game — and low-scoring games make two-run margins harder to reach, not easier.
Kansas City Royals at Colorado Rockies
MLB · Sun 3:11 PM ET · Rockies -1.5 · O/U 11.5 · ML Royals +110 / Rockies -125
Colorado's -1.5 line comes with only a -125 moneyline against Kansas City's +110, a modest 235-cent gap despite carrying the run-line tax. The total of 11.5 is the highest number on the entire slate, a full run or more above every other total posted today. That combination — a short favorite on the moneyline paired with the slate's highest total — makes the total the more interesting number here, since a short favorite doesn't need a blowout to justify a high-scoring line.
Milwaukee Brewers at Los Angeles Angels
MLB · Sun 3:16 PM ET · Brewers -1.5 · O/U 7.5 · ML Brewers -230 / Angels +194
Milwaukee's -230 moneyline against the Angels' +194 is the largest gap on the slate, and the -1.5 run line still requires a two-run margin regardless of how lopsided the moneyline looks. Heavy favorites like this often win by one run as often as by two or more, so the run-line side isn't automatically the safer play just because the moneyline is steep. The total of 7.5 is on the lower end, worth weighing on its own against the size of this favorite price.
Detroit Tigers at Athletics
MLB · Sun 4:06 PM ET · Tigers -1.5 · O/U 11 · ML Tigers -114 / Athletics -104
Detroit is listed at -1.5 but the moneyline is nearly even, -114 against the Athletics' -104, meaning both sides are priced close to a true coin flip. That's an unusual combination — a run-line favorite with almost no moneyline premium — and it suggests the -1.5 number is doing more work than the game odds otherwise imply. The total of 11 is the second-highest on the slate, which is the more notable figure here given how flat the moneyline sits.
Minnesota Twins at Seattle Mariners
MLB · Sun 4:11 PM ET · Mariners -1.5 · O/U 7 · ML Twins +120 / Mariners -140
Seattle's -1.5 carries a -140 moneyline against Minnesota's +120, a 260-cent gap that puts the Mariners in solid-favorite range. Covering -1.5 requires a two-run margin, which the total of 7 — one of the lowest on the slate — makes a real question mark, since low-scoring games tend to produce more one-run finishes than blowouts. The moneyline favorite looks reasonably priced on its own; the two-run cushion is the tougher piece to clear given the scoring expectation implied by that total.
San Francisco Giants at San Diego Padres
MLB · Sun 4:11 PM ET · Padres -1.5 · O/U 8 · ML Giants +130 / Padres -151
San Diego's -1.5 comes with a -151 moneyline against San Francisco's +130, a 281-cent gap that's on the wider side of today's board. Laying that price and still needing a two-run margin is a real combination to clear, particularly with the total sitting at 8, one of the lower numbers on the slate. A lower total generally favors tighter, one-run finishes, which cuts against the run-line side even when the moneyline favorite looks fairly solid on its own.
Boston Red Sox at Los Angeles Dodgers
MLB · Sun 7:21 PM ET · Dodgers -1.5 · O/U 8.5 · ML Sox +156 / Dodgers -181
The consensus has Dodgers -1.5, a margin narrow enough that the difference between books matters more than the difference between the teams. Totals are where a close game gets interesting, and this one is posted at 8.5. Moneyline consensus is Sox +156 / Dodgers -181. None of that is a recommendation — it is what the price implies. Check the current number before 7:21 PM ET and decide from there.
What Makes A Play A Best Bet
The phrase is used loosely everywhere, so here is the specific test a play has to pass to reach this page's card.
- A priced disagreement. Our number on the game differs from the market's by more than the vig we pay to get on. No disagreement, no play, however attractive the matchup.
- A reason that existed before the number. A schedule spot, a pace mismatch, a pitching edge, a key-number position. If the reasoning was constructed to justify a number we already liked, it is not a reason.
- A price still available. An edge that has already been bet away by the time you read it is not an edge. That is why the card ships early and why closing line value is the honest scorecard.
- A size that fits. A larger edge earns a second unit. It does not earn a bankroll. See unit sizing.
Parlays built for payout rather than price, "lock of the day" language, and the practice of publishing a best bet every single day regardless of what the board offers. Some days the honest answer is one play, and some days it is none.
How To Compare Prices Across Sports
The board above mixes leagues on purpose, because the question that matters on a mixed slate is not which game you like but which price is best. A -3.5 in the NFL, a -145 in baseball and a 224.5 total in the NBA are all the same kind of object once you convert them.
Convert everything to implied probability and the comparison becomes mechanical: a -145 favourite needs to win 59.2% of the time to break even, so if you think the true number is 63% you have a play, and if you think it is 58% you do not, no matter how confident the write-up sounds. Football spreads need the same treatment against key numbers before they are comparable at all.
The by-sport editions go deeper on each: NFL, NBA, MLB and college football.
What This Page Is Not
It is not a feed of guaranteed winners, and nobody honest sells one. Long-run handicapping at a professional level means winning somewhere in the mid-50s against the spread, which is enough to matter enormously and nothing like enough to be certain about any single game.
It is also not a substitute for your own process. The most valuable thing on this page for a new bettor is the guide list further down, not the card — are sports picks worth it makes that case honestly, including the parts that argue against paying for anything.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are the odds on this page still available to bet?
No. Every spread, total and price here is the market snapshot captured on August 2, 2026, the day this edition published. The games have been played and the numbers are a historical record. For the current board see best bets today.
Why keep old editions online?
Because a service that deletes its old boards is asking to be taken on trust. Keeping each edition exactly as it published means the numbers we posted before the games can be checked against what happened after them, and the graded plays are totalled on the records page whether the month was good or bad.
Were the plays on this card graded?
Plays are graded once the games finish, and the result is shown on the card above — win, loss or push. A play still marked pending on an old edition is one that has not been settled yet; it is never removed. Past results do not predict future results.
