Best Bets Today — August 4, 2026
Updated August 4, 2026 · Money Maverick Sports
A full 13-game MLB slate dominated by the standard -1.5 run line, which means every favorite here needs to win by two or more runs to cover, while every underdog gets covered by a one-run loss or better. The gap between each moneyline and its run line price is the real story today — some favorites are priced far shorter on the moneyline than the run line would suggest, others barely lean at all.

The Card On Aug 4
A best bet is not the game we like most. It is the game where the gap between our number and the market's is largest relative to what it costs to get on.
No graded plays were published on this page for August 4, 2026. Members receive the full card — every play, the write-up behind it and the recommended unit sizing — before the numbers move, and every result is posted publicly afterwards on the records page whether it won or lost.

Game-By-Game Previews
Each read below is drafted by our preview engine from the consensus numbers on this board and nothing else, then filtered before publication: it cannot cite an injury, a record or a statistic, because it is not given any, and language that promises a result is rejected outright. They are a starting point for your own handicapping, not a substitute for it. The plays we actually stake are on the card above.
Every number quoted in these reads is the one that was on the board on August 4, 2026. Nothing here has been revised with hindsight, and nothing here reflects the current market.
Los Angeles Angels at Baltimore Orioles
Card focus
MLB · Tue 6:36 PM ET · Orioles -1.5 · O/U 9 · ML Angels +138 / Orioles -156
Baltimore at -1.5 needs a two-run margin, and the -156 moneyline against +138 shows a moderate but real gap between straight-up and run line pricing. That gap is where the value question lives: if Baltimore is only a modest favorite to win outright, backing -1.5 requires believing in a clean, non-marginal victory rather than a nail-biter. The total at 9 sits in the middle of the range for these two lineups, making neither side of the total the obvious lean here.
Athletics at Cincinnati Reds
Card focus
MLB · Tue 6:40 PM ET · Reds -1.5 · O/U 9 · ML Athletics +120 / Reds -132
Cincinnati's -132 moneyline is tighter than most of the field's -1.5 favorites tonight, which means the run line is asking for more than the moneyline alone implies. Anyone laying -1.5 here is effectively betting against a one-run Reds win, a live outcome given how thin the moneyline gap is. With the total at 9, matching the median on the board, the side price is more instructive than the total tonight, which offers little separation from the pack.
New York Mets at Cleveland Guardians
Card focus
MLB · Tue 6:40 PM ET · Guardians -1.5 · O/U 7.5 · ML Mets +117 / Guardians -130
Cleveland at -1.5 comes with the lowest total on the sheet at 7.5, half a run under most of the slate. That combination — a modest -130 favorite laying a run and a half in a lower-scoring shell — puts real weight on the under staying live if this stays a low-event game. The Mets at +117 are live on the moneyline even if -1.5 fails to cover, since a one-run Cleveland win settles the side against the favorite.
Washington Nationals at Philadelphia Phillies
Card focus
MLB · Tue 6:40 PM ET · Phillies -1.5 · O/U 9 · ML Nationals +246 / Phillies -288
Philadelphia's -288 moneyline against a -1.5 line is the widest gap on the board today, meaning the market is far more confident in a Phillies win than in a two-run Phillies win. That disconnect makes the run line the more interesting number here: bettors uncomfortable laying -288 straight up can take -1.5 at plus value instead, betting a bigger margin rather than the outcome itself, with the total sitting at a standard 9.
St. Louis Cardinals at New York Yankees
MLB · Tue 7:06 PM ET · Yankees -1.5 · O/U 8.5 · ML Cardinals +175 / Yankees -195
New York's -195 price with St. Louis at +175 leaves a real spread between backing the Yankees outright and covering -1.5. The run line is asking specifically for a multi-run decision, not just a win, and at -195 the market already prices a comfortable favorite. The total of 8.5 sits half a run below the slate median, worth noting for anyone comparing over/under prices across games rather than isolating this one.
Chicago White Sox at Boston Red Sox
MLB · Tue 7:11 PM ET · Sox -1.5 · O/U 9 · ML Sox +128 / Sox -147
Boston -1.5 at -147 on the moneyline is a middling favorite by tonight's standards, meaning the two-run cover isn't a given even if Boston wins. Chicago's +128 says the market sees a competitive path to a straight-up White Sox win often enough to matter. With the total at 9, in line with most of the board, the side remains the more textured number here than the total.
Miami Marlins at Atlanta Braves
MLB · Tue 7:16 PM ET · Braves -1.5 · O/U 9 · ML Marlins +128 / Braves -142
Atlanta -1.5 at -142 mirrors several other favorites tonight, sitting in the middle of the pack for moneyline strength. The relevant question for -1.5 backers is whether Atlanta's margin skews toward blowout or narrow win, since -142 alone doesn't distinguish those outcomes. Miami at +128 is live on any one-run loss. The total at 9 offers no particular lean relative to the rest of the slate.
Pittsburgh Pirates at Milwaukee Brewers
MLB · Tue 7:40 PM ET · Brewers -1.5 · O/U 7.5 · ML Pirates +129 / Brewers -143
Milwaukee -1.5 at -143 pairs with the lower 7.5 total, one of two games tonight sitting half a run under the median. A lower total combined with a run-and-a-half favorite makes single-run finishes more plausible than in the higher-scoring games on the board, which cuts against the -1.5 side specifically. Pittsburgh's +129 moneyline is the more straightforward read if that pattern holds.
Minnesota Twins at Kansas City Royals
MLB · Tue 7:41 PM ET · Twins -1.5 · O/U 9 · ML Twins -142 / Royals +128
Minnesota is favored on the road at -1.5 and -142, a reminder that home field isn't doing the pricing here. The moneyline gap to Kansas City's +128 is middling for tonight's board, so the two-run margin implied by -1.5 is asking a real question rather than restating the favorite tag. The total at 9 matches the slate median and doesn't stand out on its own.
Los Angeles Dodgers at Chicago Cubs
MLB · Tue 8:06 PM ET · Dodgers -1.5 · O/U 9 · ML Dodgers -190 / Cubs +167
Los Angeles at -190 with Chicago at +167 is among the widest moneyline splits tonight, yet the spread is still the standard -1.5. That combination means the run line offers meaningfully better value than the moneyline for anyone who believes in the Dodgers but doesn't want to lay -190 outright. The total sits at 9, unremarkable relative to the rest of the board.
San Francisco Giants at Texas Rangers
MLB · Tue 8:06 PM ET · Rangers -1.5 · O/U 8 · ML Giants +169 / Rangers -193
Texas -1.5 at -193 is a significant favorite by tonight's standards, and the total here is 8, half a run under the slate median. A shorter total paired with a big favorite raises the stakes on the two-run margin specifically, since low-scoring games can settle on a single run more easily than shootouts. San Francisco's +169 is the alternative read if the game stays tight.
Toronto Blue Jays at Houston Astros
MLB · Tue 8:10 PM ET · Astros -1.5 · O/U 8.5 · ML Jays +114 / Astros -126
Houston -1.5 at -126 is about as tight as a favorite gets on this board, with Toronto sitting at +114. That narrow gap means the moneyline sees this as close to even money, which makes the two-run cover implied by -1.5 a harder ask than in games with wider favorite pricing. The 8.5 total is half a run under the median, worth weighing against the shorter favorite price.
Tampa Bay Rays at Colorado Rockies
MLB · Tue 8:41 PM ET · Rays -1.5 · O/U 11 · ML Rays -168 / Rockies +148
Tampa Bay -1.5 at -168 comes with the highest total on the slate at 11, a full 1.5 to 3.5 runs above most other games tonight. That combination suggests a shell where multi-run margins are more available, which is the case for -1.5 backers, but it also means the total itself may be the sharper angle here relative to Colorado's +148 on the moneyline.
San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks
MLB · Tue 9:41 PM ET · Diamondbacks -1.5 · O/U 9 · ML Padres +105 / Diamondbacks -116
Arizona -1.5 at only -116 is the thinnest favorite price on the entire slate, with San Diego at plus money just barely at +105. A moneyline that close to even paired with a run-and-a-half line means the -1.5 side is asking for a specific type of win, not just any win, in a game the market otherwise treats as closer to a coin flip. The total at 9 is standard for the board.
Detroit Tigers at Seattle Mariners
MLB · Tue 9:41 PM ET · Mariners -1.5 · O/U 7.5 · ML Tigers +108 / Mariners -121
The consensus has Mariners -1.5, a margin narrow enough that the difference between books matters more than the difference between the teams. Totals are where a close game gets interesting, and this one is posted at 7.5. Moneyline consensus is Tigers +108 / Mariners -121. None of that is a recommendation — it is what the price implies. Check the current number before 9:41 PM ET and decide from there.
What Makes A Play A Best Bet
The phrase is used loosely everywhere, so here is the specific test a play has to pass to reach this page's card.
- A priced disagreement. Our number on the game differs from the market's by more than the vig we pay to get on. No disagreement, no play, however attractive the matchup.
- A reason that existed before the number. A schedule spot, a pace mismatch, a pitching edge, a key-number position. If the reasoning was constructed to justify a number we already liked, it is not a reason.
- A price still available. An edge that has already been bet away by the time you read it is not an edge. That is why the card ships early and why closing line value is the honest scorecard.
- A size that fits. A larger edge earns a second unit. It does not earn a bankroll. See unit sizing.
Parlays built for payout rather than price, "lock of the day" language, and the practice of publishing a best bet every single day regardless of what the board offers. Some days the honest answer is one play, and some days it is none.
How To Compare Prices Across Sports
The board above mixes leagues on purpose, because the question that matters on a mixed slate is not which game you like but which price is best. A -3.5 in the NFL, a -145 in baseball and a 224.5 total in the NBA are all the same kind of object once you convert them.
Convert everything to implied probability and the comparison becomes mechanical: a -145 favourite needs to win 59.2% of the time to break even, so if you think the true number is 63% you have a play, and if you think it is 58% you do not, no matter how confident the write-up sounds. Football spreads need the same treatment against key numbers before they are comparable at all.
The by-sport editions go deeper on each: NFL, NBA, MLB and college football.
What This Page Is Not
It is not a feed of guaranteed winners, and nobody honest sells one. Long-run handicapping at a professional level means winning somewhere in the mid-50s against the spread, which is enough to matter enormously and nothing like enough to be certain about any single game.
It is also not a substitute for your own process. The most valuable thing on this page for a new bettor is the guide list further down, not the card — are sports picks worth it makes that case honestly, including the parts that argue against paying for anything.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are the odds on this page still available to bet?
No. Every spread, total and price here is the market snapshot captured on August 4, 2026, the day this edition published. The games have been played and the numbers are a historical record. For the current board see best bets today.
Why keep old editions online?
Because a service that deletes its old boards is asking to be taken on trust. Keeping each edition exactly as it published means the numbers we posted before the games can be checked against what happened after them, and the graded plays are totalled on the records page whether the month was good or bad.
Were the plays on this card graded?
Plays are graded once the games finish, and the result is shown on the card above — win, loss or push. A play still marked pending on an old edition is one that has not been settled yet; it is never removed. Past results do not predict future results.
